Osteosarcoma is a radioresistant cancer, and proton therapy is a promising radiation alternative for treating cancer with the advantage of a high dose concentration in the tumor area. In this work, we propose the use of iodine-substituted hydroxyapatite (IHAP) nanomaterials to use iodine (I) as a proton radiation tracer, providing access to range verification studies in mineralized tissues. For this purpose, the nanomaterials were synthesized at four iodine concentrations hydrothermal synthesis.

Even mass neutron-rich niobium isotopes are among the principal contributors to the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum. They are also among the most challenging to measure due to the refractory nature of niobium, and because they exhibit isomeric states lying very close in energy. The β-intensity distributions of ^{100gs,100m}Nb and ^{102gs,102m}Nb β decays have been determined using the total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy technique.

Fast-neutron-induced fission of ^{238}U at an energy just above the fission threshold is studied with a novel technique which involves the coupling of a high-efficiency γ-ray spectrometer (MINIBALL) to an inverse-kinematics neutron source (LICORNE) to extract charge yields of fission fragments via γ-γ coincidence spectroscopy. Experimental data and fission models are compared and found to be in reasonable agreement for many nuclei; however, significant discrepancies of up to 600% are observed, particularly for isotopes of Sn and Mo. This indicates that these models significantly overestimate the standard 1 fission mode and suggests that spherical shell effects in the nascent fission fragments are less important for low-energy fast-neutron-induced fission than for thermal neutron-induced fission.

The antineutrino spectra measured in recent experiments at reactors are inconsistent with calculations based on the conversion of integral beta spectra recorded at the ILL reactor. (92)Rb makes the dominant contribution to the reactor antineutrino spectrum in the 5-8 MeV range but its decay properties are in question. We have studied (92)Rb decay with total absorption spectroscopy.

Vesicles of different morphologies were found to form in aqueous solutions of the surfactant sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate, AOT, and in binary mixtures composed of AOT with poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate). Using electrical conductivity and fluorescence probing, two critical vesicle concentrations, cvc and cac, were determined. These critical aggregation concentrations correspond to different kinds of aggregates, which are easily observed by optical microscopy.

Background: The diagnostic workup in stable patients with penetrating thoracoabdominal injuries can be extremely difficult. Conventional diagnostic tests such as plain chest radiography, computed tomography scan, digital exploration, and diagnostic peritoneal lavage can be misleading.
