Background: A better understanding of factors that affect breast density, one of the strongest breast cancer risk indicators, may provide important clues about breast cancer etiology and prevention. This study evaluates the association of vitamin D and calcium, from food and/or supplements, to breast density in premenopausal and postmenopausal women separately.
Methods: A total of 777 premenopausal and 783 post-menopausal women recruited at two radiology clinics in Quebec City, Canada, in 2001 to 2002, completed a food frequency questionnaire to assess vitamin D and calcium.

Some studies have suggested that insulin-like growth factor (IGF) pathway is related to premenopausal breast density, one of the strongest known breast cancer risk factors. This study was designed specifically to test the hypothesis that higher levels of IGF-I and lower levels of IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-3 are associated with high mammographic breast density among premenopausal but not among postmenopausal women. View Article and Find Full Text PDFActivity screening and insertional inactivation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) biosynthetic genes in Helicobacter pylori have led to the successful characterization of two key enzymes encoded by HP0159 (JHP0147) and HP1105 (JHP1032) open reading frames (ORFs) which are members of the large and diverse carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZY) GT-8 (rfaJ) family of glycosyltransferases. Activity screening of a genomic library led to the identification of the enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of the type 2 N-acetyl-lactosamine O-chain backbone, the beta-1,3-N-acetyl-glucosaminyl transferase. In addition, the activity screening approach led to the identification and characterization of a key core biosynthetic enzyme responsible for the biosynthesis of the alpha-1,6-glucan polymer.

We have demonstrated previously the involvement of three enzymes, WbjB, WbjC, and WbjD, in the biosynthesis of UDP-2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxy-L-galactose or UDP-N-acetyl-L-fucosamine (UDP-l-FucNAc). An intermediate compound from the coupled-reaction of WbjB-WbjC with the initial substrate UDP-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucose or UDP-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) was purified, and the structure was determined by NMR spectroscopy to be UDP-2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxy-L-talose (UDP-L-PneNAc).

To further characterize this site two heparin-like disaccharides were synthesized for binding studies with CTX, and a trisaccharide was synthesized for testing the sequence of the disaccharide binding to CTX. We examined the relation of screening-mammography volume to rates of breast cancer detection and false-positive readings in the PQDCS.
Methods: The study population included 307,314 asymptomatic women aged 50-69 years screened during 1998-2000.

Background: Breast cancer may adversely affect work experience. We assessed whether there was evidence of discrimination at work, defined as negative or involuntary changes in employment situation (including changes in position, wages, and other conditions), associated with a breast cancer diagnosis in a population-based retrospective cohort study conducted in Quebec, Canada.
Methods: The study was based on the consecutive series of women aged less then 60 years when first treated for breast cancer (identified through the Quebec Tumor Registry) and a random sample of frequency-matched women living in Quebec (identified from provincial health care files) who had never been diagnosed with cancer.
Background: Practice guidelines have set a maximum waiting time to radiation therapy for breast cancer. We evaluated if delaying radiotherapy resulted in worse outcomes in a large cohort of women with node-negative breast cancer.
Methods: We selected a random sample of cases among women diagnosed with localized breast cancer in five regions of Québec, Canada, between 1988 and 1994.
Aeromonas salmonicida is a pathogenic aquatic bacterium and the causal agent of furunculosis in salmon. The samples were degraded either in distilled water or in a phosphate buffer at 37 degrees C, and the starting viscosity-average molecular weight was 130 kg/mol. The hydrolytic degradation of PPDX occurs in an approximate two stage process where the amorphous regions of the sample are attacked faster than the crystalline regions of the sample.

Two of these MAbs, L2-16 (immunoglobulin G2b [IgG2b]) and LPT3-1 (IgG2a), together with a third, previously described MAb, L3B5 (IgG3), showed reactivity, either individually or in combination, with all except 3 of 143 disease and carriage isolates (125 of 126 strains from blood, cerebrospinal fluid, or skin biopsy samples and 15 of 17 from nasopharyngeal cultures). An sdAb is fused to the B-subunit of Escherichia coli verotoxin, or shiga-like toxin, which self-assembles to form a homopentamer and results in simultaneous sdAb pentamerization and introduction of avidity. Since these saccharides are highly mobile and exist as random coils in solution, the analysis of the NMR data and molecular modeling was done to take into account this inherent flexibility. The conformational model of extended high-order helices being selected upon binding to a protein, although still hypothetical at this stage, has proven useful in explaining the serology for the conformational epitopes for polysaccharides of group B Neisseria meningitidis, group B Streptococcus type III and Streptococcus pneumoniae type 14.

The fast HPLC-MS/MS system is achieved by using mini-column HPLC coupled to tandem mass spectrometer which is advantageous over regular HPLC-MS/MS systems, such as a shorter chromatographic region of ionization suppression, less solvent consumption and higher throughput.
