- This study explored the links between specific genetic markers, alpha-thalassemia, and laboratory findings in pediatric patients with two types of sickle cell disease: sickle cell anemia (SCA) and hemoglobin SC disease (HbSC).
- Higher triglyceride levels were noted particularly in SCA, with significant correlations to lower hemoglobin and HDL cholesterol levels, as well as higher white blood cell counts and other markers related to hemolysis.
- Although treatment with hydroxyurea (HU) positively affected blood markers, it did not alter lipid levels; the study identified a specific genetic variant (rs964184) as a potential contributor to elevated triglycerides in children with sickle cell disease.
