From first-principles calculations we determine the Coulomb interaction between two holes on oligo-acene and -thiophene molecules in a crystal, as a function of the oligomer length. The electronic polarization of the molecules that surround the charged oligomer reduces the bare Coulomb repulsion between the holes by approximately a factor of 2. The effects of relaxing the molecular geometry in the presence of holes is found to be significantly smaller.

The ACR CT accreditation program, begun in 2002, requires the submission of approximately 20 images, several completed data sheets and printouts of three Excel worksheets. The procedure manual is very detailed, yet participants unfamiliar with the program or having minimal CT experience have needed to redo aspects of their submission, or in some cases do not receive accreditation, due to mistakes made by the physicist. This review of the phantom portion of the ACR CT accreditation program supplements the ACR provided instructions with additional photos of phantom setup, region-of-interest (ROI), and image placement on the film sheets, and examples of completed portions of actual (but anonymous) submissions.

With the knowledge that cells can react to lithographically manufactured nanometer-sized surface objects, our interest concerned whether cells would respond to surface structures of systematically increasing size. Our approach to answer this question was to fabricate surfaces with the same surface chemistry and similar surface roughness but increasing size of structural features. To fabricate large areas of patterned surfaces, required for cell culture studies, we used colloidal lithography utilizing colloidal particles as a template for surface nanostructuring.

The ideas of parallel imaging techniques, designed to shorten the acquisition time by the simultaneous use of multiple receive coils, can be adapted for parallel transmission of a spatially selective multidimensional RF pulse. In analogy to data acquisition, a multidimensional RF pulse follows a certain trajectory in k-space. Shortening this trajectory shortens the pulse duration.

Fatty acid synthase (FAS) is a 550 kDa homodimeric enzyme with multiple functional and structural domains. Normal mode analysis of a previously determined 19 A structure of FAS suggested that this enzyme might assume different conformational states with several distinct hinge movements. We have used a simultaneous multiple-model refinement method to search for the presence of the structural conformers from the electron images of FAS.

Various complex pharmacokinetic interrelationships affect the use of contrast media for computed tomography (CT) imaging. These include factors related to each patient's unique body habitus and their degree of health, such as their age, gender, height, weight, and cardiovascular status. Of equal importance are factors related to the contrast material injection.

The current leprosy elimination strategy focuses almost exclusively on delivery of leprosy diagnostic services and multi-drug treatment (MDT). However, the specific problems of people newly diagnosed with leprosy or cured with MDT primarily relate to impairment of nerve function and social and economic consequences of the diagnosis of leprosy. This study was carried out to investigate the relation between socio-economic factors and the development of nerve impairments and stigma.

The potential of Information and communication technology (ICT) as a method to improve care is widely acknowledged. However, before ICT can be used in a specific patient population, the needs of that population must first be made explicit. In this paper we aim to explore the feasibility and functionality of an electronic information system to support head and neck (H&N) cancer care.

Sensitivity encoding (SENSE) uses multiple MRI receive coil elements to encode spatial information in addition to traditional gradient encoding. Requiring less gradient encodings translates into shorter scan times, which is extremely beneficial in many clinical applications. SENSE is available to routine diagnostic imaging for the past 2 years.

Numerous complex pharmacokinetic interrelationships affect the use of contrast media for computed tomography (CT) imaging. The volume, concentration, and rate of injection, all affect the degree of enhancement that is achieved with an injection of contrast material. In addition, the injection technique, whether the contrast is infused with a constant injection rate (uniphasic injection) or whether the rate is altered during the injection (multiphasic injection) also affect the magnitude and duration of contrast enhancement.
