Effects of structural differences on the antibacterial activity of biflavonoids from fruits of the Brazilian peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi).

Flavonoids, synthesized by plants across all families and therefore found in a huge variety, possess a diverse range of pharmacological properties. Direct antibacterial and synergistic activities as well as the inhibition of several bacterial virulence factors are known. Besides the mode of action, it is important to understand the structure-activity relationship to identify key structural characteristics.

Effect of improved nasal airflow after adenoidectomy on nasal erectile tissue.

Objective: To determine the effect of improved nasopharyngeal airflow after adenoidectomy on nasal turbinate erectile tissue in pediatric patients.

Design: Clinical, prospective, before-and-after study.

Setting: Pediatric Otolaryngology Clinic at Hospital da Criança Santo Antônio de Porto Alegre (Complexo Hospitalar Santa Casa de Porto Alegre).

Evaluation of time of nasal packing after nasal surgery: a randomized trial.

A randomized, prospective trial was carried out to compare the rate of hemorrhagic complications after removal of nasal packing left for 24 and 48 hours. A total of 104 patients underwent nasal surgery and were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: group 1, 24 hours of nasal packing; group 2, 48 hours of nasal packing. No statistical difference was observed between the groups in terms of occurrence of hemorrhagic complications.

Can one really measure magnesium deficiency using the short-term magnesium loading test?

Objective: To compare a 1-h-version of a magnesium-loading-test (MLT) designed for outpatients in healthy controls with the 8-h standard; to establish the test in patients after renal transplantation prone to develop magnesium (Mg) deficiency; to correlate femur Mg-concentration and percentage retention of the given load.

Design: Comparison of mean values from healthy controls with respective from the literature; a prospective, randomized, controlled 4-month study; an intra-individual correlation of Mg-serum values and loading-test data with femur-Mg concentrations.

Setting: One centre study in a medical university; outpatients from the transplant unit; inpatients from the orthopedic unit.

Lateral sinus thrombosis and cervical abscess complicating cholesteatoma in children: case report and review.

To call attention to complications of chronic otitis media, the case of a patient who simultaneously developed lateral sinus thrombosis and Bezold's abscess is reported. A 7 year old boy presented with fever, drowsiness, cervical mass and otorrhea not responding to medical management. Work-up revealed lateral sinus thrombosis and cervical abscess secondary to right ear cholesteatoma.

[Lateral sinus thrombophlebitis and cervical abscess as a complication of chronic otitis media].

Objective: To focus on two rare complications of cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media.

Methods: A case of two simultaneous complications of cholesteatoma (lateral sinus thrombophlebitis and Bezold's cervical abscess) in a 7 year-old boy is reported. Thereafter, a review of the international literature about both complications is carried out.

[Neonatal encephalitis caused by herpes simplex: immunohistochemical diagnosis of a case].

The authors report the case of a female newborn infant, who had seizures and vesicles at the nose and inferior lip since the fifth day of life. CSF changes suggested an encephalitis. Signs of neurologic and respiratory deterioration were followed by death.
