Pediatric Long COVID has been associated with a wide variety of symptoms, conditions, and organ systems, but distinct clinical presentations, or subphenotypes, are still being elucidated. In this exploratory analysis, we identified a cohort of pediatric (age <21) patients with evidence of Long COVID and no pre-existing complex chronic conditions using electronic health record data from 38 institutions and used an unsupervised machine learning-based approach to identify subphenotypes. Our method, an extension of the Phe2Vec algorithm, uses tens of thousands of clinical concepts from multiple domains to represent patients' clinical histories to then identify groups of patients with similar presentations.

The use of Medicinal Cannabis (MC) for treating chronic pain is increasing, globally, yet the definition of problematic MC use remains unclear. Defining problematic use of cannabis in medical and non-medical contexts may be fundamentally different since individuals prescribed MC often experience physical dependence, which do not necessarily imply pathology. We aimed to conceptualize problematic use of MC and develop a brief questionnaire for identifying and quantifying problematic MC use.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between acute kidney injury (AKI) and outcomes in patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a serious condition with a high risk of complications.
  • An analysis of over 76,000 SAH patients from 2010 to 2019 shows that about 14% developed AKI, with these patients being older and more likely to be obese compared to those without AKI.
  • Findings indicate that AKI is significantly associated with poorer functional outcomes, longer hospital stays, and higher in-hospital mortality, highlighting the need for early detection to improve recovery chances.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals", are a class of man-made, extremely stable chemicals, which are widely used in industrial and commercial applications. Exposure to some PFAS is now known to be detrimental to human health. By virtue of PFAS long residence times, they are widely detected in the environment, including remote locations such as the Arctics, where the origin of the PFAS is poorly understood.

Introduction: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has been associated with an increased risk for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). As individuals with cancer who experience AIS tend to face higher mortality rates compared to AIS patients without cancer, recognizing the implications of RCC in AIS is crucial for identifying high-risk patients for major complications and directing management strategies.

Objective: To examine risk factors, interventions, and outcomes for patients with AIS stratified by their RCC diagnosis.

Introduction: For the treatment of single-sided deafness (SSD), common treatment choices include a contralateral routing of signals (CROS) hearing aid, a bone conduction device (BCD), and a cochlear implant (CI). The primary aim of this study was to compare speech understanding in noise and binaural benefits in adults with postlingual SSD between preoperative unaided baseline, preoperative CROS and BCD trial devices, and CI, following recommendations from a consensus protocol. In addition, we investigated the effect of masker type on speech understanding.

This study provides a unique translational research opportunity to help both humans and dogs diagnosed with diseases that carry dismal prognoses in both species: histiocytic sarcoma (HS), hemangiosarcoma (HSA), and disseminated mastocytosis/mast cell tumor (MCT). Although exceedingly rare in humans, these so called "orphan diseases" are relatively more common in dogs. For these and other more commonplace cancers like lymphoma (Lym), dogs are an excellent translational model for human disease due to remarkably similar disease biology.

Acute lung injury in COVID-19 results in diffuse alveolar damage with disruption of the alveolar-capillary barrier, coagulation activation, alveolar fibrin deposition and pulmonary capillary thrombi. Nebulized recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) has the potential to facilitate localized thrombolysis in the alveolar compartment and improve oxygenation. In this proof-of-concept safety study, adults with COVID-19-induced respiratory failure and a <300 mmHg PaO/FiO (P/F) ratio requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) or non-invasive respiratory support (NIRS) received nebulized rt-PA in two cohorts (C1 and C2), alongside standard of care, between 23 April-30 July 2020 and 21 January-19 February 2021, respectively.

Given the rise of automated vehicles from an engineering and technical perspective, there has been increased research interest concerning the Human and Computer Interactions (HCI) between vulnerable road users (VRUs, such as cyclists and pedestrians) and automated vehicles. As with all HCI challenges, clear communication and a common understanding-in this application of shared road usage-is critical in order to reduce conflicts and crashes between the VRUs and automated vehicles. In an effort to solve this communication challenge, various external human-machine interface (eHMI) solutions have been developed and tested across the world.
