Article Synopsis
- Most of the ATP in cells is produced in the mitochondria from ADP and phosphate (Pi), with specific carriers transporting these substrates across the inner membrane.
- Research on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae identified a new phosphate carrier, named PIC2, in addition to the previously known mitochondrial Pi carrier MIR1, indicating that multiple isoforms may exist.
- Overexpressing PIC2 can compensate for defects in phosphate transport in specific mutant strains and suggests that Pic2p might be important under stress conditions, with its levels increasing at higher temperatures.
