Objective: A challenge in health professions is training practitioners to navigate health care complexities, promote health, optimize outcomes, and advance their field. Physical therapist residency education offers a pathway to meet these needs in ways that "entry-level" (professional) education may not. Identifying key aspects of excellence in residency education and understanding its value in developing adaptive expertise will help devise strategies to enhance program, resident, and patient outcomes.

Slow oscillation (SO) brainwaves observed during sleep have been shown to reflect the process of memory consolidation, that underlies the critical role of sleep in learning, memory, and other cognitive functions. Closed-loop auditory stimulation (CLAS) uses tones presented in phase with SOs to increase their amplitude and number, along with other brainwave signatures related to memory consolidation. Prior studies have found that CLAS maximizes the ability to perform rote memorization tasks, although this remains controversial.

Article Synopsis
  • Limited research exists on dry needling for mechanical shoulder pain, though it may help with muscle pain, range of motion, and strength.
  • A 68-year-old woman with shoulder impingement underwent traditional physical therapy, achieving moderate pain relief and improved range of motion but faced stalled progress.
  • After integrating dry needling into her treatment, significant improvements in pain reduction, range of motion, and functional outcomes were noted after just two sessions, with continued benefits observed at a 6-month follow-up.

Streamflow records are biased toward large streams and rivers, yet small headwater streams are often the focus of ecological research in response to climate change. Conventional flow measurement instruments such as acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADVs) do not perform well during low-flow conditions in small streams, truncating the development of rating curves during critical baseflow conditions dominated by groundwater inflow. We revisited an instantaneous solute tracer injection method as an alternative to ADVs based on paired measurements to compare their precision, efficiency, and feasibility within headwater streams across a range of flow conditions.

Introduction: Wearable neuromuscular and biomechanical biofeedback technology has the potential to improve patient outcomes by facilitating exercise interventions. We will conduct a systematic review to examine whether the addition of wearable biofeedback to exercise interventions improves pain, disability and quality of life beyond exercise alone for adults with chronic non-specific spinal pain. Specific effects on clinical, physiological, psychological, exercise adherence and safety outcomes will also be examined.

Unlabelled: Physical activity avoidance and fear of movement (FOM) is often observed in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain, along with difficulties coping with pain. There is little research regarding how FOM may also relate to reduced physical strength and altered movement patterns that may perpetuate a cycle of pain, FOM, and disability. The objective of this observational study was to compare how adolescents with juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM) exhibiting high versus low FOM (Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia-11) differed on patient-reported measures of pain, fatigue, catastrophizing and pain interference, and performance-based measures of strength, postural control, and biomechanical function.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is the number one cause of disability worldwide; however, it is not clear how social determinants of health (SDOH) impact care management and outcomes related to physical therapy (PT) services for patients with LBP.

Objective: The purposes of this scoping review are to examine and assimilate the literature on how SDOH and PT care relate to non-specific LBP outcomes and identify gaps in the literature to target for future research.

Methods: Data were extracted from eight electronic databases from January 2011 to February 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to identify which initial signs of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can help predict long-term functional issues, focusing on symptoms rather than just clinical criteria.
  • It involved 177 male athletes, ranging from former NCAA Division I to NFL players, who shared their experiences through Zoom interviews.
  • Results indicate that experiencing loss of consciousness (LOC) during mTBI is a significant predictor of long-term neurobehavioral symptoms, with depression and insomnia potentially mediating this relationship, highlighting the need for early symptom monitoring after such injuries.

Rationale: The application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) to murine lungs is challenging due to the spongy nature of the tissue. Lungs consist of interconnected air sacs (alveoli) lined by a single layer of flattened epithelial cells, which requires inflation to maintain its natural structure. Therefore, a protocol that is compatible with both lung instillation and high spatial resolution is essential to enable multi-omic studies on murine lung disease models using MALDI-MSI.
