Objective: Obesity and overweight are associated with low-grade inflammation induced by adipose tissue expansion and perpetuated by altered intestinal homeostasis, including increased epithelial permeability. Intestinal epithelium functions are supported by intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) mitochondria function. However, diet-induced obesity (DIO) may impair mitochondrial activity of IEC and consequently, intestinal homeostasis.

Variability in warning signals is common but remains puzzling since deviations from the most common form should result in a higher number of predator attacks. One explanation may lie in constraints due to genetic correlations between warning colour and other traits under selection. To explore the relationship between variation in warning colour and different life-history traits, we used an extensive data set comprising 64,741 individuals from a Finnish and an Estonian population of the wood tiger moths, Arctia plantaginis, that have been maintained in captivity over 25 generations.

Introduction: Pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia (PE), preterm birth (PTB), and intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR) have individually been associated with inflammation but the combined comparative analysis of their placental profiles at the transcriptomic and histological levels is lacking.

Methods: Bulk RNA-sequencing of human placental biopsies from uncomplicated term pregnancies (CTL) and pregnancies complicated with early-onset (EO), and late-onset (LO) PE, as well as PTB and term IUGR were used to characterize individual molecular profiles. We also applied immune-cell-specific cellular deconvolution to address local immune cell compositions and analyzed placental lesions by histology to further characterize these complications.

Article Synopsis
  • Postpartum preeclampsia (PPPE) is a condition that can occur after childbirth, within 48 hours to 6 weeks, and is often not diagnosed due to unknown causes, creating a need for better identification methods.
  • The study collected placentas and blood samples from both healthy and PPPE patients to analyze immune responses and discover potential biomarkers that could predict PPPE risk.
  • Findings suggest that certain immune cells and cytokine levels could serve as predictive markers for PPPE, paving the way for immune-targeted treatments and improving follow-up care for new mothers.

Introduction: Children with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries face many challenges and lack adequate services, including access to rehabilitation professionals. To address this lack of access, Amar Seva Sangam Ayikudy (ASSA), a non-governmental organization (NGO) in India, designed a technology-leveraged rehabilitation program called Enabling Inclusion (EI), and implemented it in one state (Tamil Nadu, India) before scaling it. The model is supported by the EI app, which enables organizations to screen, assess and monitor progress of children with disabilities via rehabilitation specialists and community rehabilitation workers, and to provide family-centered, goal-based interventions.

Colour is often used as an aposematic warning signal, with predator learning expected to lead to a single colour pattern within a population. However, there are many puzzling cases where aposematic signals are also polymorphic. The wood tiger moth, , displays bright hindwing colours associated with unpalatability, and males have discrete colour morphs which vary in frequency between localities.

Introduction: The use of antiretroviral therapy drastically reduces vertical transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus. However, recent studies demonstrate associations between ART use during pregnancy and placental inflammation, particularly within protease inhibitor (PI)-based regimens. We sought to characterize placental macrophages, namely Hofbauer cells, according to the class of ART used during pregnancy.

Effective management of protected species requires information on appropriate evolutionary and geographic population boundaries and knowledge of how the physical environment and life-history traits combine to shape the population structure and connectivity. Saltwater crocodiles () are the largest and most widely distributed of living crocodilians, extending from Sri Lanka to Southeast Asia and down to northern Australia. Given the long-distance movement capabilities reported for , management units are hypothesised to be highly connected by migration.

Background: Preterm birth remains a leading obstetrical complication because of the incomplete understanding of its multifaceted etiology. It is known that immune alterations toward a proinflammatory profile are observed in women with preterm birth, but therapeutic interventions are still lacking because of scarcity of evidence in the integration of maternal and placental interrelated compartments.

Objective: This study aimed to obtain an integrated view of the maternal and placental contribution to preterm birth compared with normal term pregnancies for an in-depth understanding of the immune/inflammatory involvement, intending to identify novel strategies to mitigate the negative impact of inflammation.

Structural colours, produced by the reflection of light from ultrastructures, have evolved multiple times in butterflies. Unlike pigmentary colours and patterns, little is known about the genetic basis of these colours. Reflective structures on wing-scale ridges are responsible for iridescent structural colour in many butterflies, including the Müllerian mimics and Here, we quantify aspects of scale ultrastructure variation and colour in crosses between iridescent and non-iridescent subspecies of both of these species and perform quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping.
