Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring trace element that is nutritionally essential for humans and animals, but becomes toxic at high concentrations. This laboratory study explored the role of microbes in Se removal from contaminated wastewater via biological transformation and volatilization processes. Microbes could immobilize water-soluble selenate (SeO) and selenite (SeO) to water-insoluble elemental Se (Se) and transform Se into volatile Se compounds found in the atmosphere.

Guided by the multiphase optimization strategy, we explored three components for PLWH without viral suppression, grounded in motivational interviewing and behavioral economics: (1) motivational interviewing counseling, (2) 21-weeks of automated text messages and quiz questions about HIV management, and (3) financial rewards for viral suppression (lottery prize vs. fixed compensation).

EPEC forms attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions on the apical surface of the small intestine, leading to diarrhea. The locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) is both necessary and sufficient for A/E lesion morphogenesis by EPEC.
