Purpose: Computerized clinical decision support systems (CDSS) are an emerging means for improving healthcare safety, quality and efficiency, but meta-analyses findings are mixed. This meta-synthesis aggregates qualitative research findings as possible explanations for variable quantitative research outcomes.

Inclusion Criteria: Qualitative studies published between 2000 and 2013 in English, involving physicians, registered and advanced practice nurses' experience of CDSS use in clinical practice were included.

Karpicke and Blunt (Reports, 11 February 2011, p. 772) reported that retrieval practice produces greater gains in learning than elaborative studying with concept mapping and concluded that this strategy is a powerful way to promote meaningful learning of complex concepts commonly found in science education. We question their findings on methodological and epistemological grounds.

We describe the use of an on-line Raman analyzer to quantitatively track the levels of trans-stilbene, benzaldehyde, and alpha-methoxybenzyl hydroperoxide in a continuous flow ozonolysis reactor. Quantitative analysis is carried out using spectral stripping in order to overcome baseline artifacts inherent in simple peak area determinations and to incorporate prior knowledge into the analytical model. The performance of spectral stripping is compared to partial least squares (PLS) analysis.
