Stakeholder perspectives on continuous observation in inpatient psychiatric wards.

Unlabelled: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Continuous observation is often used in mental health wards to support the safety of service users, where they will be constantly watched by a member of staff. Evidence suggests that continuous observations may be unhelpful and restrictive, but not enough is known about the practice or the best ways to improve it. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This evaluation integrates the perspectives of service users, informal carers and staff to explore current continuous observation experiences and inform future improvements.

Gaining an Empathetic Insight into Parenting: Evaluating Infant Simulator Dolls for Professional Learning.

The development of an empathetic approach when working with parents and families is fundamental to both social work and children's nursing; however, opportunities to develop this are limited. RealCare Baby infant simulator dolls were used with the aim of enabling students to gain an empathetic insight into parenting. A qualitative, evaluation study involving semistructured interviews with 10 social work and 11 children's nursing students was undertaken to evaluate experiences and views of infant simulator dolls, in relation to professional learning.

Applying Universal Principles of 'Best Interest': Practice Challenges across Transnational Jurisdictions, Cultural Norms, and Values.

This article sets out key issues in determining and upholding the best interests of children, in need of social service support, who have family networks that span outside of the UK. These issues are then analysed against whether and how child protection professionals take these into account along with an overall consideration of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child's (UNCRC) 'best interests of the child', when assessing and planning for those needs in kinship care cases. Building on these themes, the findings of an exploratory study on international kinship care cases carried out by Children and Families Across Borders (CFAB), the UK branch of the non-governmental organisation, International Social Service, as well as CFAB's associated Freedom of Information Requests to the UK government, are examined.

Whole Life: a feasibility study of a recovery-focussed intervention in patients with stabilised schizophrenia.

Background: The Recovery Approach is about supporting people to live the best life they possibly can. This paper reports on a 2008-11 study of a recovery-focussed, one-to-one coaching programme called Whole Life (WL) in a group of people with stabilised schizophrenia. WL comprises 15 modules, each addressing an aspect of life that may pose challenges for someone with mental illness.

Undertaking pre-pilot work to gain an empathetic insight into participants' perspectives.

Background: Being an empathetic researcher can be crucial in understanding participants' perspectives. However, while the need for empathy is recognised in qualitative interview research, there is less acknowledgement of its value with other methods of collecting data. Researchers can face various challenges when the instruments and approaches used to collect data are new to them.

Risk assessment in mental health: staff attitudes and an estimate of time cost.

Background: Risk assessment is a routine part of mental health services, with professionals being required to complete a risk assessment proforma (RAP) for every patient under their care.

Aims: This study was designed to investigate staff attitudes to, and beliefs about, the completion of risk assessment paperwork.

Method: We surveyed 300 professionals across one county to examine: (i) the amount of time taken to complete RAPs; (ii) attitudes towards completing such paperwork; and (iii) beliefs about the quality and usefulness of the information recorded.
