One of the main causes of death worldwide is lung cancer, which is largely caused by cigarette smoking. The crucial transcription factor NF-κB, which controls inflammatory responses and various cellular processes, is a constitutively present cytoplasmic protein strictly regulated by inhibitors like IκB proteins. Upon activation by external stimuli, it undergoes phosphorylation, translocates into the nucleus, and modulates the expression of specific genes.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer, especially non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is a major health issue globally, leading to high mortality rates; Zerumbone (ZER), a natural compound from Zingiber zerumbet, shows promise in fighting cancer but faces challenges due to low solubility and absorption.!* -
  • Researchers developed liquid crystalline nanoparticles (LCNs) loaded with ZER to improve its delivery and effectiveness against NSCLC; in vitro tests using A549 lung cancer cells revealed that ZER-LCNs inhibited cell growth and migration more effectively than ZER alone, with a lower required dosage.!* -
  • The study found that ZER-LCNs work by regulating key tumor suppressor and metastasis-associated

Chronic inflammation of the respiratory tract is one of the most concerning public health issues, as it can lead to chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), some of which are more detrimental than others. Chronic respiratory diseases include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer, and pulmonary fibrosis. The conventional drug therapies for the management and treatment of CRDs only address the symptoms and fail to reverse or recover the chronic-inflammation-mediated structural and functional damage of the respiratory tract.

Current therapeutic options for obesity often require pharmacological intervention with dietary restrictions. Obesity is associated with underlying inflammation due to increased tissue macrophage infiltration, and recent evidence shows that inflammation can drive obesity, creating a feed forward mechanism. Therefore, targeting obesity-induced macrophage infiltration may be an effective way of treating obesity.

Inflammation, the major hallmark of all chronic respiratory diseases is generally managed by inhaled corticosteroids. However, long term high dose treatment can result in significant side effects. Hence, there is a medical need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory therapies to address airway inflammation.

The lymphatic system is essential for the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and immunity. Its dysfunction in disease (such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis) can lead to chylous effusions, oedema or dissemination of malignant cells. Collagen IV has six α chains, of which some of the non-collagenous-1 domains have endogenous anti-angiogenic properties, however, little is known about specific endogenous anti-lymphangiogenic characteristics.
