Article Synopsis
  • The K2 Summit camera is a unique direct electron detection camera designed for high-speed counting of primary electrons, featuring centroiding to enhance resolution beyond the Nyquist limit.
  • In this study, researchers tested this camera's performance using crystallized samples of aquaporin-0, a membrane protein.
  • They analyzed how the electron dose rate affected the amplitudes and phases of the images captured, evaluating performance both at and beyond the Nyquist limit.

Malate and lactate dehydrogenases (MDH and LDH) are homologous, core metabolic enzymes that share a fold and catalytic mechanism yet possess strict specificity for their substrates. In the Apicomplexa, convergent evolution of an unusual LDH from MDH produced a difference in specificity exceeding 12 orders of magnitude. The mechanisms responsible for this extraordinary functional shift are currently unknown.
