The distortions and instability of high-symmetry configurations of polyatomic systems in nondegenerate states are usually ascribed to the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect (PJTE). The geometries of hypericin, isohypericin, and fringelite D were optimized within various symmetry groups. Group-theoretical treatment and (TD-)DFT calculations were used to identify the corresponding electronic states during the symmetry descent.

Conformational flexibility is one of the main disadvantages of peptide-based compounds. We focus on their molecular 'chameleonicity' related to forming pseudo-cyclic motifs via modulation of weak intramolecular interactions. It is an appealing strategy for controlling equilibrium between the polar open and the nonpolar closed conformations.

The anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-cancer properties, as well as the mechanism of action of cyclo-[Pro-Pro--HoPhe-Phe-] tetrapeptide (denoted as 4B8M), were recently described. The aim of this work was to synthesize and evaluate the immunosuppressive actions of the stereochemical variants of 4B8M by sequential substitution of -amino acids by -amino acids (a series of peptides denoted as P01-P07) using parent 4B8M as a reference compound. In addition, diverse available bioinformatics tools using machine learning and artificial intelligence were tested to find the bio-pharmacokinetic and polypharmacological attributes of analyzed stereomers.

The dimethylaminophenyl-substituted silver phthalocyanine [dmaphPcAg] can be used as a UV-vis photoinitiator for in situ preparation of a silver/polymer nanocomposite. To verify early steps of the supposed mechanism of radical polymerization, we performed quantum chemical calculations of [dmaphPcAg] complexes with charges q = +1 to -2 in the two lowest spin states m, of a free ligand and its dehydrogenated/deprotonated products [dmaphPcH], n = 2 to 0, q = 0, -1 or -2, in the lowest spin states m. The calculated electronic structures and electron transitions of all the optimized structures in CHCl solutions are compared with experimental EPR and UV-vis spectra, respectively.

The modernization of logistics through the use of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Internet of Things (IoT) devices promises great efficiencies. Sensor devices can provide real-time or near real-time condition monitoring and location tracking of assets during the shipping process, helping to detect delays, prevent loss, and stop fraud. However, the integration of low-cost WSN/IoT systems into a pre-existing industry should first consider security within the context of the application environment.

The structures of Ag complexes with dimethyl amino phenyl substituted phthalocyanine [dmaphPcAg] of various charges q and in the two lowest spin states m were optimized using the B3LYP method within the D symmetry group and its subgroups. The most stable reaction intermediate in the supposed photoinitiation reaction is [dmaphPcAg]. Group-theoretical analysis of the optimized structures and of their electron states reveals two symmetry-descent mechanisms.

The molecular structure of mycotoxins enniatin B and beauvericin, which are used as ionophores, was studied using density functional theory in various symmetry groups and singly charged states. We have shown that the charge addition or removal causes significant structural changes. Unlike the neutral C molecules, the stability of the charged C structures was explained by the Jahn-Teller or Pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect.

Article Synopsis
  • - Episodic ataxias (EA) are mostly inherited conditions that involve repeated episodes of ataxia and other movement-related symptoms, often linked to mutations in certain genes like CACNA1A and KCNA1.
  • - A systematic review of existing literature examined clinical and genetic data from 717 patients with pathogenic variants to understand genotype-phenotype correlations, revealing significant variability in symptoms.
  • - The study suggests that due to this variability, comprehensive genetic testing (like panel, whole exome, or genome sequencing) is recommended for more accurate diagnosis and management of EA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the molecular and electronic structure of curcumin, focusing on its tautomers and their deprotonated forms in various symmetry groups.
  • The stability of lower-symmetry structures is linked to the Pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT) effect, which explains the persistence of different symmetries in the enol and keto forms.
  • The analysis highlights the PJT effect's potential role in influencing electronic and vibrational energy levels, which could be significant for the photoprotective properties of natural dyes.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 17 or ATX-TBP is a CAG/CAA repeat expansion disorder characterized by marked clinical heterogeneity. Reports of affected carriers with subthreshold repeat expansions and of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) with expanded repeats have cast doubt on the established cutoff values of the expansions and the phenotypic spectrum of this disorder. The objective of this systematic review was to explore the genotype-phenotype relationships for repeat expansions in TBP to delineate the ATX-TBP phenotype and reevaluate the pathological range of repeat expansions.

Herein, we report a case of alopecia universalis and transient accommodation spasm presented after alemtuzumab administration in a patient previously treated with fingolimod. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of accommodation spasm as an acute adverse effect of alemtuzumab. Treatment with alemtuzumab in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis has been identified as a risk factor for developing secondary autoimmunity within the follow-up period (peak 18-36 months from the first infusion) such as thyroid disorders.

Short peptides have great potential as safe and effective anticancer drug leads. Herein, the influence of short cyclic peptides containing the Pro-Pro-Phe-Phe sequence on patient-derived melanoma cells was investigated. Cyclic peptides such as cyclo(Leu-Ile-Ile-Leu-Val-Pro-Pro-Phe-Phe-), called CLA, and cyclo(Pro-homoPro-βhomoPhe-Phe-), called P11, exert the cytotoxic and the cytostatic effects in melanoma cells, respectively.

Background And Objectives: Autoantibodies against α3-subunit-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α3-nAChRs), usually measured by radioimmunoprecipitation assay (RIPA), are detected in patients with autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy (AAG). However, low α3-nAChR antibody levels are frequently detected in other neurologic diseases with questionable significance. Our objective was to develop a method for the selective detection of the potentially pathogenic α3-nAChR antibodies, seemingly present only in patients with AAG.

Background And Purpose: Seven thousand rare diseases have been identified; most of them are of genetic origin. The diagnosis of a neurogenetic disease is difficult, and management and training programs are not well defined through Europe. To capture and assess care needs, the Neurogenetics Panel of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) has performed an explorative survey.

Autosomal recessive axonal neuropathy with neuromyotonia (ARAN-NM) is a rare hereditary neuropathy within the Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) spectrum, linked to mutations in the histidine triad nucleotide-binding protein 1 (HINT1) gene. HINT1-related neuropathy is particularly common in selected populations from Central and Eastern Europe but rare in Western European cohorts. It has not been investigated to date in the Greek population.

Two new photopolymerizable vinyl (2-(allyloxy) 1,4-naphthoquinone, ) and epoxy (2-(oxiran-2yl methoxy) 1,4-naphthoquinone, ) photoinitiators derived from lawsone were designed in this paper. These new photoinitiators can be used as one-component photoinitiating systems for the free-radical photopolymerization of acrylate bio-based monomer without the addition of any co-initiators. As highlighted by the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin-trapping results, the formation of carbon-centered radicals from an intermolecular H abstraction reaction was evidenced and can act as initiating species.
