Project SafeFoodPack Design: case study on indirect migration from paper and boards.

Migration due to indirect contact with packaging caused several major sanitary crises, including the spread contamination of dry food by mineral oils and printing ink constituents from cardboard. The issues are still not fully resolved because the mechanisms have been insufficiently described and the relationship between design, contamination level, type of contaminant, and conditions of storage (time and temperature) are poorly understood. This study proposes a forensic analysis of these phenomena when food is separated from cardboard by a plastic layer.

Analysis of plasticizers in PVC medical devices: Performance comparison of eight analytical methods.

A wide variety of medical devices (MDs) used in hospitals are made of flexible plasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC). Different plasticizers are present in variable amounts in the PVC matrix of the devices and can leach out into the infused solutions and may enter into contact with the patients. The ARMED project aims to assess the migration of these plasticizers from medical devices and therefore the level of exposure in patients.

The consequences of physical post-treatments (microwave and electron-beam) on food/packaging interactions: A physicochemical and toxicological approach.

The safety of microwave and electron-beam treatments has been demonstrated, in regards to the formation of reaction products that could endanger human health. An integrated approach was used combining the potential toxicity of all the substances likely to migrate to their chemical characterizations. This approach was applied to polypropylene (PP) films prepared with a selection of additives.

Alternatives to DEHP plasticizers are used in various PVC medical devices (MD) for infusion. As they are able to migrate from these MDs into infused solutions, they may come into contact with patient. [Study of vitamin D supplementation in people over 65 years in primary care].

Background: Most of the elderly have vitamin D deficiency, which is defined as a serum level below 30 ng/mL.

Objectives: To identify the characteristics of patients over 65 receiving vitamin D supplements by their primary care physician. A descriptive and transverse study was performed on patients over 65 years old admitted to Care Following at the La Croix Rouge in Nantes from September 2012 to February 2013.

Migrability of PVC plasticizers from medical devices into a simulant of infused solutions.

Medical devices (MD) for infusion and artificial nutrition are essentially made of plasticized PVC. The plasticizers in the PVC matrix can leach out into the infused solutions and may enter into contact with the patients. In order to assess the risk of patient exposure to these plasticizers we evaluated the migration performance of DEHP, DEHT, DINCH, and TOTM using a model adapted to the clinical use of the MDs.
