Background: Hospital-based Palliative Care Consultation Teams (PCCTs) have a consulting role to specialist services at their request. Referral of patients is often late. Early palliative care in oncology has shown its effectiveness in improving quality of life, thereby questioning the "on request" model of PCCTs.

However, the inaccuracy of endoscopy in determining the depth of intramural necrosis may lead to unnecessary esophageal resection, with devastating consequences. Our aim was to evaluate the use of computed tomography (CT) for the emergency diagnostic workup of endoscopic high-grade corrosive esophageal necrosis.

Background: Simultaneous esophageal and pharyngeal reconstruction by colopharyngoplasty allows regaining nutritional autonomy in patients with severe pharyngoesophageal caustic injuries.
Methods: Patients who underwent upper digestive tract reconstruction for caustic injuries by colopharyngoplasty (n = 116) and esophagocoloplasty (n = 122) between 1993 and 2012 were included.
Methoxypyrazines (MPs) are strongly odorant volatile molecules with vegetable-like fragrances that are widespread in plants. Some grapevine (Vitis vinifera) varieties accumulate significant amounts of MPs, including 2-methoxy-3-isobutylpyrazine (IBMP), which is the major MP in grape berries. MPs are of particular importance in white Sauvignon Blanc wines.

However, higher EBA incidence and predisposing genetic factor(s) involving an HLA haplotype have been suspected in some populations. This retrospective study assessed the overrepresentation of black patients with EBA, its link with HLA-DRB1*15:03, and their clinical and immunological characteristics.

Observations: Twenty-five patients with severe refractory MMP, including 5 with mucous membrane-dominant epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, received 1 or 2 cycles of rituximab (375 mg/m(2) weekly for 4 weeks).
Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the technique of colopharyngoplasty for the reconstruction of concomitant esophageal and pharyngeal caustic injuries and to evaluate the postoperative course and late functional outcomes.
Summary Background Data: Surgical treatment of esophageal and pharyngeal strictures is a difficult challenge because reconstruction at this level interferes with the mechanisms of deglutition and respiration. Several techniques have been described for the treatment of this condition but none is accepted as the gold standard.
We conducted a prospective study between 1995 and 2002 to investigate nose and throat (NT) manifestations of mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP). One hundred ten consecutive patients with clinical, histologic, and immunologic criteria of MMP were seen in 2 referral centers for bullous diseases. They were systematically asked about the existence of persistent NT symptoms.

In life or sight-threatening cases, intravenous cyclophosphamide pulses are efficient but may have digestive side effects and imply repeated hospitalizations.

For this AA levels of different food groups were used as collected by the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) of the European Commission's Directorate General Joint Research Centre (JRC) from April 2003 up to May 2004. This database contained about 3500 AA levels received from mainly Germany, The Netherlands, Ireland, Greece, Austria, UK and from food industry.

In a prospective study, we evaluated the efficacy of extracorporeal lithotripsy (ECL) in the treatment of salivary stones. We define the indications for the treatment of submaxillary and parotid stones, depending on the diameter and the location of the stone. Twenty-seven patients were treated by ECL.

We know of only three case reports of intraoral locations without tongue involvement. Here, we describe the first case of an alveolar soft-part sarcoma of the cheek which presented in a patient over 30 years old and had an extremely rapid and eventually fatal evolution.

We compared our results with those obtained with other procedures. Between March 1995 and September 1998, pharyngoesophagoplasty by right coloplasty was performed in 13 patients.

Major tissue loss involving the ears and periauricular area due to carcinologic exeresis is an important problem in reconstructive surgery. We present the "béret" flap, a frontal flap with an occipital pedicle, emphasizing the simplicity of the procedure and its reliability. We present our personal experience and data in the literature and recall the main clinical and histological features of these tumors as well as the clinical course and treatment.

From January 1988 to July 1992, 68 patients presenting with a locally advanced and unresectable carcinoma of the head and neck region were given 3 to 5 courses of chemotherapy (5-FU 1 g/m2, day 1 to 3, cisplatin 4 mg/m2, day 1 and 2, 15 mg/m2 day 8) combined with simultaneous radiotherapy. Patients were enrolled in two protocols. In the initial one a 70 Gy total dose was delivered in 105 days, and in the latter the same dose was given in only 63 days.

Authors report two cases of 31 and 42 year old women who for many years had a unilateral nasal obstruction: first case due to a large polyp, second one due to a mucosal inflammation but both caused by a rhinolithiasis. The latter is formed over several years around a vegetable seed or a piece of material neglected since childhood. The rhinolithiasis is a calcareous concretion formed in layers visible by X-rays.
