Aim: To assess the baseline characteristics of patients referred for isolated coronary bypass surgery (CABG), waiting times for coronary bypass surgery and clinical events while waiting for coronary bypass surgery. The electrochemical determination of zinc arising from zinc-insulin complexes was investigated and it was demonstrated that zinc in zinc-insulin solution can be measured in the presence of dissolved oxygen by square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) at mercury thin-film electrodes on glassy carbon disc minielectrode and cylindrical carbon fibre microelectrode substrates. Reoxidation signals arise from complexed zinc at low insulin concentrations (< 100 nmol l-1) and from labile zinc at higher concentrations; the latter can be quantified through linear calibration curves. Batch injection analysis with SWASV was successfully tested for the determination of zinc in zinc-insulin solutions in small sample volumes.

Batch-injection analysis exhibits the advantages of rapid and simple electroanalysis of microlitre samples. Nafion-coated mercury thin film electrodes have been evaluated for use in batch-injection analysis with anodic stripping voltammetry (BIA-ASV). The advantages of Nafion-coated electrodes in reducing electrode contamination by components of complex matrices are combined with the analysis of small microlitre sample volumes.

Objective: To assess the ability of a cohort of junior hospital doctors to interpret ECGs which have immediate clinical relevance and influence subsequent management of patients.

Methods: 57 junior hospital doctors were interviewed and asked to complete a standard questionnaire which included eight ECGs for interpretation and a supplementary question relating to the administration of thrombolytic treatment. Each doctor was assessed over a 48 h period while they performed their daily clinical duties.

The paleontological record of the lower and middle Paleozoic Appalachian foreland basin demonstrates an unprecedented level of ecological and morphological stability on geological time scales. Some 70-80% of fossil morphospecies within assemblages persist in similar relative abundances in coordinated packages lasting as long as 7 million years despite evidence for environmental change and biotic disturbances. These intervals of stability are separated by much shorter periods of ecological and evolutionary change.

An adsorptive stripping voltammetry method for the determination of traces of molybdenum(VI) in flowing solution at a wall-jet electrode sensor has been developed. After adsorption of a molybdenum complex on a wall-jet mercury film electrode, the complex is reduced by a square wave scan. More satisfactory results were obtained using 8-hydroxyquinoline as a complexing agent in nitrate medium than using Toluidine Blue in oxalic acid.

Taurine, a beta-amino acid, plays an important role as a neuromodulator and is necessary for the normal development of the brain. Since de novo synthesis of taurine in the brain is minimal and in vivo studies suggest that taurine does not cross the blood-brain barrier, we examined whether the choroid plexus, the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, plays a role in taurine transport in the central nervous system. The uptake of [3H]taurine into ATP-depleted choroid plexus from rabbit was substantially greater in the presence of an inwardly directed Na+ gradient, whereas in the absence of a Na+ gradient taurine accumulation was negligible.

The subcellular location of a glucuronyltransferase (GT) involved in glucuronoxylan synthesis in pea (Pisum sativum) has been investigated. Most of the GT activity was found in the Golgi fraction, but activity was also detected in the plasma-membrane fraction. Separation of Golgi membranes on a shallow continuous sucrose density gradient resulted in three distinct subfractions, with GT activity being confined to Golgi membranes of a density similar to that of smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

Cardiac output and myocardial blood flow decrease dramatically in a dose-dependent pattern in the young lamb during isoflurane anesthesia. This raises important questions about the ability of the young lamb to increase myocardial performance if oxygen delivery were compromised by a decrease in oxygen content during anesthesia and surgery. A particulate enzyme preparation from etiolated pea (Pisum sativum) epicotyls was found to incorporate xylose from UDP-D-xylose into beta-(1----4)-xylan. The ability of this xylan to act as an acceptor for incorporation of [14C]glucuronic acid from UDP-D-[14C]glucuronic acid in a subsequent incubation was very limited, even though glucuronic acid incorporation was greatly prolonged when UDP-D-xylose was present in the same incubation as UDP-D-[14C]glucuronic acid. This indicated that glucuronic acid could not be added to preformed xylan.

A particulate enzyme preparation made from suspension-cultured dwarf-French-bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cv. Canadian Wonder cells was shown to incorporate xylose from UDP-D-[14C]xylose into polysaccharide. The reaction was dependent upon the presence of UDP-D-glucose and was stimulated, and apparently protected, by GDP-D-glucose and GDP-D-mannose, though neither was able to replace UDP-D-glucose as a glycosyl donor.
