A major challenge is to understand maladaptive changes in ion channels that sets neurons on a course towards epilepsy development. Voltage- and calcium-activated K+ (BK) channels contribute to early spike timing in neurons, and studies indicate that the BK channel plays a pathological role in increasing excitability early after a seizure. Here, we have investigated changes in BK channels and their accessory β4 subunit (KCNMB4) in dentate gyrus (DG) granule neurons of the hippocampus, key neurons that regulate excitability of the hippocampus circuit.

Objective: Severe blunt chest trauma in humans is associated with high mortality rates. Whereas lung tissue damage and lung inflammation after blunt chest trauma have extensively been investigated, the traumatic and posttraumatic effects on the heart remain poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to define cardiac injury patterns in an experimental blunt chest trauma model in rats.

Familial Mediterranean Fever and Incidence of Cancer: An Analysis of 8,534 Israeli Patients With 258,803 Person-Years.

Objective: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory disease manifested as recurrent serosal inflammation. An association between FMF and malignancy has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to estimate cancer risk in a large cohort of FMF patients from a single institution.

Mesenchymal stem cells in peripheral blood of severely injured patients.

Purpose: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are primarily stromal cells present in bone marrow and other tissues that are crucial for tissue regeneration and can be mobilized into peripheral blood after different types of organ damage. However, little is known about MSC appearance in blood in the setting of polytrauma.

Methods: We conducted a monocentered and longitudinal observational clinical study in 11 polytraumatized patients with an injury severity score (ISS) ≥ 24 to determine the numbers of MSCs in peripheral blood.

The reconstruction of the signal from hadrons and jets emerging from the proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and entering the ATLAS calorimeters is based on a three-dimensional topological clustering of individual calorimeter cell signals. The cluster formation follows cell signal-significance patterns generated by electromagnetic and hadronic showers. In this, the clustering algorithm implicitly performs a topological noise suppression by removing cells with insignificant signals which are not in close proximity to cells with significant signals.

This paper describes the implementation and performance of a particle flow algorithm applied to 20.2 fb[Formula: see text] of ATLAS data from 8 TeV proton-proton collisions in Run 1 of the LHC. The algorithm removes calorimeter energy deposits due to charged hadrons from consideration during jet reconstruction, instead using measurements of their momenta from the inner tracker.

The ATLAS trigger system is a crucial component of the experiment, responsible for selecting events of interest at a recording rate of approximately 1 kHz from up to 40 MHz of collisions. This paper presents a short overview of the changes to the trigger and data acquisition systems during the first long shutdown of the LHC and shows the performance of the trigger system and its components based on the 2015 proton-proton collision data.

Cartilage injury can trigger crucial pathomechanisms, including excessive cell death and expression of matrix-destructive enzymes, which contribute to the progression of a post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). With the intent to create a novel treatment strategy for alleviating trauma-induced cartilage damage, we complemented a promising antioxidative approach based on cell and chondroprotective N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) by chondroanabolic stimulation. Overall, three potential pro-anabolic growth factors - IGF-1, BMP7 and FGF18 - were tested comparatively with and without NAC in an ex vivo human cartilage trauma-model.
