Comparative studies often use the value to convey statistical significance, but fragility indices (FI) and fragility quotients (FQ) may better signify statistical strength. The use of aspirin as venous thromboembolism (VTE) chemoprophylaxis following elective arthroplasty has been debated between the orthopedic and cardiac fields. The purpose of this study was to apply both the FI and FQ to evaluate the degree of statistical fragility in the total joint arthroplasty (TJA) literature regarding aspirin (ASA) use for VTE prevention.

Background: Being unhoused can increase vulnerability to adverse health effects due to air pollution. We aimed to quantify changes in emergency-department visits during and after exposure to wildfire-specific and non-wildfire particulate matter 2·5 μm or less in diameter (PM) in San Diego County (CA, USA) in people who were both unhoused and housed.

Methods: For this time-stratified case-crossover study, we used data on exposure to wildfire-specific PM in California and individual-level data for people admitted to the emergency departments of two hospitals (UC San Diego Health emergency departments at La Jolla and Hillcrest, San Diego) in San Diego County between July 1, 2012, and Dec 31, 2020.

The 10-23 DNAzyme is one of the most active DNA-based enzymes, and in theory, can be designed to target any purine-pyrimidine junction within an RNA sequence for cleavage. However, purine-pyrimidine junctions within a large, structured RNA (lsRNA) molecule of biological origin are not always accessible to 10-23, negating its general utility as an RNA-cutting molecular scissor. Herein, we report a generalizable strategy that allows 10-23 to access any purine-pyrimidine junction within an lsRNA.

Article Synopsis
  • Hip fractures significantly impact patients' recovery and mortality, but there's limited research on postoperative functional outcomes compared to similar-aged individuals, prompting this study to explore relevant factors.
  • A review of 214 hip fracture cases from July 2020 to June 2023 analyzed three-month recovery through a PROMIS-PF survey, correlating various factors like age, comorbidities, and surgery type with functional scores and one-year mortality rates.
  • Results showed that only 47.7% reached functional levels similar to age-matched peers, with better outcomes linked to total hip arthroplasty and home discharges, while older age and certain health conditions lowered scores.

Background As the population ages, surgical intervention for degenerative spine conditions is increasing, and this causes a commiserate increase in healthcare expenditures associated with these procedures. Little research has been done on the effect of early-week versus later-week surgeries on patient outcomes, cost, and length of stay (LOS) in patients undergoing lumbar fusion surgery. The purpose of this study is to compare LOS, patient outcomes, and hospital costs between patients having surgery early in the week and later in the week.

Electron energy loss spectra collected from fresh and corroded silver nanoparticles are compared with those from a number of reference materials, focusing on the M edge. Chemical shifts and changes in the energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) are described and found to be sufficient to distinguish metallic silver from chemically oxidised silver. The measurements, in conjunction with electron energy loss spectrum imaging, are used to assess the mechanisms for atmospheric corrosion of silver nanoparticles.
