Unlabelled: Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is an intercellular phospholipid mediator with a variety of actions that suggest a role in stimulating inflammatory responses. We therefore studied its actions on neutrophil (PMN) motility and respiratory burst. Substances forming calamitic mesophases have been known for more than 100 years but only the recent, rapid advance in active matrix liquid crystal display (AM-LCD) technology helped these materials to achieve the crucial position in flat panel display technology they hold today. A series of charged and neutral four-center n-electron (4c-ne, n = 1-4) molecules based on the adamantane framework, but which include combinations of boron, nitrogen, and phosphorus atoms at bridgehead positions, were studied computationally at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of density functional theory (DFT). The three-dimensional aromaticity, observed earlier for the 1,3,5,7-bisdehydroadamantane dication (1), is found to be general for 4c-2e electron systems. The degree of electron delocalization, evaluated by energetic, geometric, and various magnetic criteria, is quite independent of the molecular symmetry (point groups vary from Td to Cs), the degeneracy of the orbitals, the molecular charges, and the nature of the atoms participating in the delocalized bonding.

Thesecondary structure of adsorbed immunoglobulin G (IgG) on different silica surfaces (hydrophilic, hydrophobic, hydrophobic with preadsorbed triblock-copolymers consisting of a polypropylene oxide buoy and two polyethylene oxide chains dangling in the solution) is studied by ATR-FTIR. Some results for adsorbed bovine serum albumin (BSA) are also presented. The secondary structure of adsorbed IgG was quantified using second-derivative spectra for the input parameters of the curve-fitting analysis of the original spectra.

Background: Although effectiveness of fractionated radiotherapy for painful bone metastases is well documented, there are unanswered questions regarding the adequacy of low-dose short radiation schedules for long-term pain control which give maximum benefit in patients with a short life expectancy.

The somewhat "exotic" pentafluorosulfuranyl functionality is one of the strongest electron-withdrawing groups with a purely inductive effect. Owing to its chemical stability and the resulting high dipole moment of its aromatic derivatives, this group was crucial to the design and synthesis of a new class of highly polar liquid crystals (such as 1) for application in active matrix displays. A computational model was developed with the aim to understand and predict the electrooptic properties of liquid crystals based on hypervalent sulfur fluorides.

Thermal denaturation of mouse monoclonal immunoglobulin G (isotype 1), as well as structural rearrangements resulting from adsorption on a hydrophobic Teflon surface, are studied by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Both heat-induced and adsorption-induced denaturation do not lead to complete unfolding into an extended polypeptide chain, but leave a significant part of the IgG molecule in a globular or corpuscular form. Heating dissolved IgG causes a decrease of the fractions of beta-sheet and beta-turn conformations, whereas those of random coil and, to a lesser extent, alpha-helix increase.

Cyclooxygenase or prostaglandin endoperoxide H synthase-2 (PGHS-2) is the first enzyme in the prostanoid biosynthetic pathways and, in brain, it is regulated as an immediate-early gene (IEG). PGHS-2 mRNA and protein are rapidly induced by physiological synaptic activity, and high basal expression in cerebral cortex appears to be maintained by the natural synaptic activity. In contrast to other IEGs, PGHS-2 is a dendritic protein that is enriched in dendritic spines and is, therefore, likely to play a direct role in synaptic physiology.

Oligomeric N-methyl D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) in brain is a ligand-gated ion channel that becomes selectively permeable to ions upon binding to ligands. For NMDAR channel, the binding of glutamate and glycine results in opening of the calcium permeable channel. Because the calcium influx mediated by NMDAR is important for synaptic plasticity and excitotoxicity, the function of NMDA receptors has been implicated in both health and disease.

Prostaglandins formed by the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes are important mediators of inflammation in arthritis. The contribution of the inducible COX-2 enzyme to inflammation in rat adjuvant arthritis was evaluated by characterization of COX-2 expression in normal and arthritic paws and by pharmacological inhibition of COX-2 activity. The von Hippel-Lindau locus on chromosome 3p is a tumor suppressor gene known to be involved in nonpapillary renal cell carcinoma. A previous loss of heterozygosity (LOH) study aimed at determining the allelotype of kidney tumors has indicated that in addition to 3p, chromosome arms 5q, 6q, 10q, 11q, 17p, and 19p may also harbor tumor suppressor genes. However, cytogenetic studies reveal that chromosomes 3p, 6q, 8p, 9pq, and 14q most frequently undergo karyotypic changes in renal tumors.
