Renal cell carcinoma metastasizing to pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm - the second case described in the world literature.

Tumor-to-tumor metastases are very rare events. We report a case of a 64-year-old man who presented with a tumor of the pancreas. The patient underwent partial pancreatectomy.

Diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in patients with liver metastases from follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC).

Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second most common type of thyroid cancer (TC) and accounts for approximately 10% of all TC cases. Liver metastases are a rare presentation in 0.5-1% of follicular thyroid cancers, usually occurring in the setting of widely disseminated FTC disease, and their presence is associated with poor prognosis.

Thyroid metastases from a breast cancer diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Case report and overview of the literature.

Aim: Intrathyroid metastases are uncommon in cytology practice. We report a case of metastatic lesion in the thyroid from breast carcinoma which was recognized in a fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy and confirmed by immunohistopathology. In addition, we provide an overview of the literature describing similar cases.

Disseminated cutaneous Kaposi sarcoma in a patient receiving triptolide/tripdiolide for rheumatoid arthritis.

Background: To date, Kaposi sarcoma has not been mentioned among the adverse effects of triptolide/tripdiolide, ethyl acetate extracts or polyglycosides of the Chinese herbal remedy Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F.

Case Report: A patient was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 29 years. She underwent treatment with corticosteroids, methotrexate and gold sodium thiosulfate, and was chronically taking ketoprofen.

Mesenchymal hamartoma of the liver - case report and short literature overview.

Mesenchymal hamartoma (MH) is an uncommon benign hepatic tumour that presents mostly before the age of 2 years. Its biology and pathogenesis are poorly understood. We present the case of a 1-year-old male patient with a huge tumour of the right lobe of the liver which showed rapid enlargement.

A case of primary testicular germ cell tumor with rhabdomyosarcoma metastases as an example of applying the FISH method to diagnostic pathology.

We present the interesting case of a 38-year-old man with a primary malignant tumor of the right testis that metachronously metastasized to the urinary bladder and the stomach. Histologically, the testicular tumor was a mixed germ cell tumor composed of teratoma and embryonal carcinoma, but it also contained a sarcoma component of somatic type malignancy. Metastases showed rhabdomyoblastic differentiation histologically identical to the sarcoma component of the testicular tumor that was diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma.

Metastatic Brenner tumor--a case report.

In our report we present a case of metastatic Brenner tumor of the right ovary in a 74-year-old woman. The diagnosis was based on microscopic examination of surgical specimen and a comparison of the immunohistochemical profile of the primary and metastatic tumors. Additionally, we proved urothelial differentiation of the proliferating Brenner tumor, which is in accordance with the literature.

A prospective study of thyroid nodular disease in children and adolescents in western Poland from 1996 to 2000 and the incidence of thyroid carcinoma relative to iodine deficiency and the Chernobyl disaster.

Background: In Poland, where soil is deficient in iodine, supplementation of iodine was introduced in 1935, discontinued in 1980, and then re-introduced in 1997. One of the effects of inadequate iodine intake, prior to 1997, was an increase in the prevalence of thyroid nodular disease (TND) in children. Chernobyl, located in the neighbouring country of Ukraine, suffered a catastrophic nuclear explosion in April 1986.

BRCA2 mutations and androgen receptor expression as independent predictors of outcome of male breast cancer patients.

Purpose: Germline mutations of the BRCA2 gene are involved in the development of a considerable number of male breast cancer cases. Although phenotypic differences have been observed between sporadic and BRCA-related breast carcinomas, conflicting data exist on the differences in prognosis of women with hereditary and sporadic breast cancer. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prognostic value of BRCA2 status in male breast carcinoma (MBC).

[Thyroid cancer in autonomous "hot nodule"].

17-year-old girl with thyroid tumor of the right lobe is described in this paper. Based on clinical picture and diagnostic criteria the follicular adenoma was suspected pre-operatively as the most likely final diagnosis. Post-operative histopathological evaluation proved the presence of the oxyphilic type of follicular thyroid cancer within the follicular adenoma.

Hot nodules in children and adolescents in western Poland from 1996 to 2000: clinical analysis of 31 patients.

In an iodine deficient area, a high incidence of hot thyroid nodules was observed in children after the introduction of iodine supplementation in 1997. Thirty-one children (28 girls, 3 boys) were identified with hot nodules between the years 1996-2000 (3 patients in 1996, 4 in 1997, 10 in 1998, 7 in 1999, and 7 in 2000). The incidence ratio of hot nodules in this study population increased significantly from 0.

Somatic mutations in the BRCA2 gene and high frequency of allelic loss of BRCA2 in sporadic male breast cancer.

Breast cancer occurs rarely in men and risk factors for the disease include germline mutations of the BRCA2 gene. High frequency of allelic loss at the BRCA2 locus has been reported in sporadic breast tumors, but somatic mutations of BRCA2 are very rare. Here we report the first case of somatic BRCA2 mutation in male breast cancer with demonstrated loss of heterozygosity.

BRCA2 germline mutations in male breast cancer patients in the Polish population.

Breast cancer is a rare disease in men. Germ-line mutations in BRCA2 and androgen receptor (AR) genes are thought to be responsible for a proportion of male breast cancer cases. The present study was performed on a series of 37 consenting patients not selected for family history of breast/ovarian cancer.

Expression of interleukin-6, interleukin-6 receptor, and glycoprotein 130 correlates with good prognoses for patients with breast carcinoma.

Background: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is secreted by normal epithelial breast cells but not by oncogene-transformed cells. Interleukin-6 is able to inhibit growth of breast carcinoma cells in culture. Interleukin-6 exerts its activity via two receptor subunits, IL-6R and glycoprotein 130 (gp130).

Lectin staining of renal tubules in normal kidney.

Lectins are glycoproteins able to bind carbohydrate structures specifically. In this study we applied six different lectins on normal renal tissue to investigate their specificity for different segments of the renal tubular system. The following lectins were used: jacalin, peanut agglutinin (PNA), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), phytohemagglutinin E (PHA-E), concanavalin A (Con A), and Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA).

Lectin staining of renal cell tumours with special emphasis on oncocytomas.

There are conflicting results respecting the segmental tubular origin of renal oncocytomas, a type of tumour said to be highly differentiated and benign, though metastases have been described. The aim of this study was, by applying different lectins on renal cell carcinomas (n = 50) and oncocytomas (n = 12), to search for patterns which could indicate a specific segmental origin of oncocytomas and perhaps elucidate the differentiation of this tumour. Morphological aspects of the aortofemoral graft thrombosis.

Sixty seven patients underwent aorto-femoral double velour grafting for aortoiliac occlusive disease and 38 patients were treated for recurrent lower limb ischemia following aortofemoral grafting. Apart from various clinical examinations the patients underwent angiography as well as the morphological investigation of specimens obtained from abdominal aortae, common femoral arteries and from grafts implanted into the aorto-femoral section. The examinations showed that diffuse intimal thickening may, in the course of atherosclerosis, convert itself into uncomplicated fibrous and further into complicated plaques impairing mainly graft outflow.

Morphological changes in femoropopliteal venous grafts.

Morphological examination of specimens obtained from 82 venous grafts implanted into the femoropopliteal section were done. Intimal oedema, necrosis of single smooth muscle cells and partial exfoliation of the endothelium with as occurrence of parietal thrombi may lead to early graft impatency. The late cause of stenosed inner diameter below 4 mm in the venous graft was in 14,6% the hyperplasia of the smooth muscle cells and collagen and elastin fibres in the intima, whereas in 4,9% the changes were defined as graft atherosclerosis.
