Because adolescent distal third tibia fractures pose treatment challenges, we aimed to identify factors predictive of failure among common treatment methods: casting without manipulation, closed reduction and casting (CRC) and open treatment. Background: This study evaluated the prevalence of radiographic abnormalities potentially indicative of femoroacetabular impingement on AP pelvic radiographs in asymptomatic adolescents and young adults and aimed to determine whether the abnormalities were predictive of future hip pain.

Methods: AP pelvis images from scoliosis radiographs were obtained from patients 12 to 25 years of age free of any clinical hip/lower extremity symptoms between January 2006 and September 2009. The following radiographic abnormalities were collected: lateral center-edge angle of Wiberg >40° or <25°, Tönnis angle <0° or >10°, acetabular retroversion (crossover sign with a posterior wall sign), acetabular overcoverage (crossover sign without a posterior wall sign), and anterior offset alpha angle, calculated using alpha angle of Nötzli >50°.

Multiple lines of evidence implicate brain serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) system dysfunction in the pathophysiology of stressor-related and anxiety disorders. Here we investigate the influence of constitutively deficient 5-HT synthesis on stressor-related anxiety-like behaviors using Tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (Tph2) mutant mice. Functional assessment of c-Fos after associated foot shock, electrophysiological recordings of GABAergic synaptic transmission, differential expression of the Slc6a4 gene in serotonergic neurons were combined with locomotor and anxiety-like measurements in different contextual settings.

The hygiene hypothesis or "Old Friends" hypothesis proposes that inflammatory diseases are increasing in modern urban societies, due in part to reduced exposure to microorganisms that drive immunoregulatory circuits, and a failure to terminate inappropriate inflammatory responses. Inappropriate inflammation is also emerging as a risk factor for trauma-related, anxiety, and affective disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is characterized as persistent re-experiencing of the trauma after a traumatic experience. Traumatic experiences can lead to long-lasting fear memories and exaggerated fear potentiation of the acoustic startle reflex.

Genetics provides significant opportunities to maximize the safety and efficacy of medicines. Over the next 3--5 years, it may be possible to develop tools that use selective information from patients' DNA to enable healthcare professionals to predict more accurately those patients at risk of serious adverse events to some medicines currently available. This is likely to be followed, over the next 5--10 years, by the application of the technology to predict more accurately if individual patients will obtain a therapeutic benefit from a particular medicine.

Aerosol pentamidine (AP) is an FDA-approved prophylaxis against pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in HIV-infected individuals who have a CD4+ lymphocyte count less than 200/mm3, constitutional symptoms, or a previous history of the pneumonia. The University of Washington Medical Center, a 450-bed tertiary care center, established a successful aerosol pentamidine treatment program, providing treatment in its special procedure nit. The authors present an overview of AP and discuss the role of interdisciplinary teamwork, staff training, patient teaching, and the provision of safety measures for patients and healthcare providers.

The 5-HT-induced shape change and subsequent aggregation of platelets provides a functional assay for 5-HT2 receptors. In the present study we describe a method to increase aggregometer sensitivity by digital conversion of the voltage produced by changes in light transmittance through a platelet suspension, thereby allowing accurate analyses of the primary shape-change response.
