The steroidal compound 17beta-estradiol (E2) is a major estrogen now widely studied because of its potential endocrine disruption effects. The present paper describes a simple, rapid, flow injection (FI) method for the fluorimetric determination of beta-estradiol involving a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) packed into a microcolumn. Microwave-assisted extraction, a relatively new technique, was used to help remove the template from the MIP; this improved extraction efficiency.

In uremic patients, severe parathyroid hyperplasia is associated with reduced parathyroid calcium-sensing receptor (CaR) expression. Thus, in these patients, a high serum Ca concentration may be required to inhibit parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. Dengue-IgM diagnostic kit was independently used in each of the serotypes and an index value was calculated (optical density of the sample/cut-off value) in each case, with which two statistical analyses were made: Fisher's variances and Litter significant difference (LSD) calculation. Such calculations allowed determining that in Cuba and Panama, serotype 2 circulated whereas in Costa Rica, serotype 1 prevailed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether PBL of untreated sporadic breast cancer patients harbor an elevated number of both DNA strand breaks.
Methods: Forty breast cancer patients without family history of cancer in clinical stage III devoid of treatment and 60 age-matched healthy subjects without history of breast cancer were included.

To gain insight into the nature of the tubulointerstitial injury induced in these models, we studied lectin-binding specificities, vimentin expression, and heat shock protein (HSP) 60 and 70 in these experimental models.
Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats received Ang II infusion (435 ng/kg/min) for 2 weeks by subcutaneous minipumps (Ang II group, N = 5) or l-NAME in the drinking water (70 mg/100 mL) for 3 weeks (l-NAME group N = 7).

The mean age of the cases was 60 years in males and 58 years in females. Using in situ hybridization assay of EBV-encoded small RNA-1 in paraffin-embedded tissue samples, we identified 23 cases of EBV-GC (13%).

Methods: Microsatellite analysis on chromosome 12 was performed on 19 human gastric cancer cell lines using 77 markers, 71 of which were within or distal to 12q21; some portions of this region showed extended regions of homozygosity (ERHs) in 10 of 19 gastric cancer cell lines. In addition, microdissected tumour cells from 76 primary gastric adenocarcinomas were examined using 13 markers of interest implicated by the cell line data; 70% of these showed allelic imbalance (AI) at one or more markers in or distal to 12q21.
Infection with Helicobacter pylori has been recognized as a cause of gastric carcinoma. Although the neoplasia is always detected in adults, the infection starts in childhood. It has been reported that early age at first infection is a determinant of gastric cancer risk.
