Background: Coenzyme Q10 belongs to important antioxidants and it has a key role in the synthesis of adenosinetriphosphate. Its beneficial effect was proved in several diseases, e.g.

Many data have been collected on oxidation stress in dialysed patients, however a shortage of information is evident in conservatively treated patients.
Study Aims: To determine the blood and/or plasma levels of MDA and the selected antioxidants, i.
Creatine kinase reaction rates were measured by the magnetisation transfer technique in brains of healthy adult and aged rats and in rats with chronic cerebral ischemia and chronic ethanol intoxication. These measurements indicated that the rate constant of the creatine kinase reaction is significantly reduced in the case of severe chronic cerebral ischemia in aged rats. In the adult rats, during chronic ethanol intoxication after 3 weeks of administration of 3 ml of 30% ethanol once a day via a gastric tube, a significant decrease in the pseudo first-order rate constant k(for) of the creatine kinase reaction was also found.

Coenzyme Q has an important function in mitochondrial bioenergetics and is also a powerful antioxidant. Coenzyme Q (CoQ) regenerates alpha-tocopherol to its active form and prevents atherogenesis by protecting low-density lipoproteins against oxidation.

Four groups of rabbits were investigated: control (C), passive smoking of three cigarettes twice daily/30 minutes (S), control + captopril (7.5 mg/kg body weight twice daily) (Cap), and smoking + captopril (SCap) as in group 2 and 3.

The values were compared to the group of 14 patients with cardiomyopathies of unclear etiology as candidates for heart transplantation. Blood analyses were also compared with 50 healthy persons.

Acute rejection of the transplanted heart was histologically graded as: 0 (without), 0-1 (incipient), 1 (mild), 2 (moderate). The level of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in 28 EMB was estimated by HPLC.
