Here, the Fermi level () shifts of several donor and acceptor materials in different atmospheres are systematically studied by following the work function (WF) changes with Kelvin probe measurements, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Reversible shifts are found with the trend of higher WFs measured in ambient air and lower WFs measured in high vacuum compared to the WFs measured in ultrahigh vacuum. The shifts are energy level and morphology-dependent, and two mechanisms are proposed: (1) competition between p-doping induced by O and HO/O complexes and n-doping induced by HO; (2) polar HO molecules preferentially modifying the ionization energy of one of the frontier molecular orbitals over the other.

Seagrass meadows are vital blue carbon habitats, with sedimentary organic carbon (OC) originating from both the seagrass itself and external sources. In this study, lipid biomarkers (n-alkanes), a well-known proxy for tracing OC sources, were used to indicate seagrass presence in sediment records and to correlate with sedimentary OC in cold-temperate seagrass (Zostera marina) sediments. We calculated a Zostera-ratio (seagrass/algae and terrestrial plants-ratio) using identified seagrass biomass n-alkanes (C, C, C, C, C) as a fingerprint for seagrass-derived OC.

EWSR1/FUS::TFCP2-rearranged rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare tumor with an aggressive clinical course, a predilection for craniofacial bones, spindled and/or epithelioid histomorphology, and positive immunohistochemistry (IHC) for epithelial and myogenic markers, along with variable ALK expression. Herein, we present four additional cases of primary cutaneous TFCP2-rearranged RMS. Notably, one tumor (case 1) displayed a varied pathological spectrum, initially presenting as a low-grade spindle cell neoplasm, but progressed into a high-grade spindle/epithelioid tumor.

In the field of cattle medicine in Austria, to date, few studies have investigated the presence of methicillin-resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing in Austria. For this reason, milk and nasal samples were examined for the presence of methicillin-resistant as well as fecal samples for extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant . The nasal and fecal swabs were collected during the veterinary treatment of calf pneumonia and calf diarrhea.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurocritical illnesses often lead to increased mortality in low-resource countries, and early neurodeterioration (END) may help identify high-risk patients for better care.
  • A study conducted in Zambia monitored neurology inpatients to assess the impact of END, defined as a decline in the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) within three days of admission.
  • The results showed that 18% of patients experienced END, significantly increasing their risk of death (72% vs 11% mortality), with common causes of death being aspiration pneumonia and sepsis, indicating a need for targeted interventions.

Background: The accurate estimation of residual growth is crucial for the appropriate timing of growth-guiding surgery in patients with axial leg deviations. Skeletal age methods such as the Modified and the Abbreviated Modified Fels Knee System were developed on historical patient cohorts and the applicability to the modern pediatric population with axial leg deviation has not yet been evaluated.

Questions/purposes: Are both final adult height prediction methods (the Modified Fels Knee System (FKS) and the Abbreviated Modified Fels Knee System (aFKS)) accurate to determine SA and the final adult height on long leg radiographs in patients with axial leg deviations?Which multiplier table shows highest association between predicted and true final adult body height?Do FKS- and aFKS- skeletal age determination methods improve final adult body height prediction accuracy compared to the simple use of chronological age?

Methods: A single center, retrospective study of 31 patients who underwent temporary hemiepiphysiodesis due to axial leg deviations in the frontal plane between 2018 and 2020 was conducted.
