Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and mortality rates of congenital heart diseases (CHD) in newborns in French Guiana between 2012 and 2016, an area lacking prior research on this topic.
  • The findings revealed that out of 33,796 births, there were 231 CHD cases, with anomalies primarily in the ventricular outflow tract and a significant number having chromosomal or genetic anomalies.
  • The study indicates a high infant mortality rate associated with CHD, especially in cases of functionally univentricular hearts, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to reduce these mortality rates in the region.*

Introduction: Several studies have reported a higher frequency and greater morbidity and mortality of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) of black African descent.

Objectives: We aimed to describe the clinical, laboratory and echocardiographic characteristics as well as outcomes of children with MIS-C requiring admission to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in the French West Indies (FWI), where the majority of the population is Afro-Caribbean.

Methods: Ambidirectional observational cohort study between April 1, 2020 and August 31, 2022.

We describe the case of a patient who developed resistant hypertension due to a giant atheroma with acquired physiologic mimic of coarctation of the aorta. This presentation illustrates an extremely rare etiology to consider in adults in whom aortic isthmus stenosis remains often of congenital origin. ().

We report a case of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis, a fungal brain infection due to a dark (dematiaceous) fungi in a 6-year-old French Guyanese boy. The child presented fever and drowsiness due to several paraventricular brain abscesses. Neurological surgeries were performed to reduce intracranial hypertension and to obtain abscess biopsies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses the safety and effectiveness of the Occlutech Duct Occluder (ODO) for closing patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in patients at two academic centers from April 2013 to September 2017.
  • A total of 42 patients, ranging from 4 months to 68 years old, successfully underwent the procedure with no embolization or hemolysis, and significant improvements in shunt closure were observed over time: 71% at one day, rising to 100% by one year.
  • The ODO was found to be safe for use in patients with various duct types and sizes, but further research with larger samples and longer follow-ups is needed to validate

Through this article, we aim to introduce Holos-a new collaborative environment that allows researchers to carry out experiments based on similarity assessments between stimuli, such as in projective-mapping and sorting tasks. An important feature of Holos is its capacity to assess real-time individual processes during the task. Within the Holos environment, researchers can design experiments on its platform, which can handle four kinds of stimuli: concepts, images, sounds, and videos.

A synthetic route for the preparation of symmetrical and unsymmetrical archaeal tetraether-like analogues has been described. The syntheses are based upon the elaboration of hemimacrocyclic tetraether lipid cores from versatile building blocks followed by simultaneous or sequential introduction of polar head groups. Functionalizations of the tetraether lipids with neutral lactose or phosphatidylcholine polar heads and cationic glycine betaine moieties were envisaged both to increase membrane stability and to exhibit interactions with charged nucleic acids.

The in vitro stability of archaeosomes made from novel synthetic membrane-spanning tetraether lipids was evaluated in conditions mimicking those of oral route application in terms of bile salts, serum and low pH..

Unsymmetrical archaeal tetraether glycolipid analogues 1-2 incorporating a 1,3-disubstituted cyclopentane ring into the bridging chain have been synthesized. The cyclopentane has been introduced with a totally controlled cis configuration, either into the middle of the aliphatic chain or at three methylene groups from the glycerol unit linked to the bulkier disaccharide residue. Freeze-fracture and cryotransmission electron microscopy experiments clearly demonstrated unprecedented glycolipid supramolecular organizations involving two-by-two monolayer associations coupled with interconnection and fusion phenomena.
