Article Synopsis
  • Longevity is linked to genetics, and a study examined 43 SNPs in a Croatian group aged 85 and older to see which factors influence living to older ages (90+ and 95+ years).
  • For reaching 90, nine SNPs were identified that accounted for 20% of survival variance, while five SNPs contributed to 9.3% for reaching 95.
  • The study highlighted two SNPs (TERC rs16847897 and GHRHR rs2267723) as most significant for longevity, and calculated Genetic Longevity Scores, with the weighted score for age 90 being 69% predictive of survival to that age.

In this method, the potential of optics and holography to uncover hidden details of a natural system's dynamical response at the nanoscale is exploited. In the first part, the optical and holographic studies of natural photonic structures are presented as well as conditions for the appearance of the photophoretic effect, namely, the displacement or deformation of a nanostructure due to a light-induced thermal gradient, at the nanoscale. This effect is revealed by real-time digital holographic interferometry monitoring the deformation of scales covering the wings of insects induced by temperature.

Convective, conductive and radiative mechanisms of thermal management are extremely important for life. Photonic structures, used to detect infrared radiation (IR) and enhance radiative energy exchange, were observed in a number of organisms. Here we report on sophisticated radiative mechanisms used by Morimus asper funereus, a longicorn beetle whose elytra possess a suitably aligned array of lenslets and blackbodies.

Article Synopsis
  • Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) can lead to serious health issues, especially in immunocompromised individuals and during pregnancy, but data on its prevalence are limited.
  • A study in Croatia tested 338 serum samples from both exposed (like forestry workers and hunters) and non-exposed groups (general population and pregnant women) for LCMV antibodies and found a 6.8% positivity rate overall.
  • Results suggested that living in rural areas and having contact with rodents increased the risk of LCMV infection, but differences based on gender and water source did not significantly impact results.

Rhinoviruses (RVs) are increasingly implicated not only in mild upper respiratory tract infections, but also in more severe lower respiratory tract infections; however, little is known about species diversity and viral epidemiology of RVs among the infected children. Therefore, we investigated the rhinovirus (RV) infection prevalence over a 2-year period, compared it with prevalence patterns of other common respiratory viruses, and explored clinical and molecular epidemiology of RV infections among 590 children hospitalized with acute respiratory infection in north-western and central parts of Croatia. For respiratory virus detection, nasopharyngeal and pharyngeal flocked swabs were taken from each patient and subsequently analyzed with multiplex RT-PCR.

Modern document protection relies on the simultaneous combination of many optical features with micron and submicron structures, whose complexity is the main obstacle for unauthorized copying. In that sense, documents are best protected by the diffractive optical elements generated lithographically and mass-produced by embossing. The problem is that the resulting security elements are identical, facilitating mass-production of both original and counterfeited documents.

Upon illumination by ultraviolet light, many animal species emit light through fluorescence processes arising from fluorophores embedded within their biological tissues. Fluorescence studies in living organisms are however relatively scarce and so far limited to the linear regime. Multiphoton excitation fluorescence analyses as well as nonlinear optical techniques offer unique possibilities to investigate the effects of the local environment on the excited states of fluorophores.
