This study aimed to assess pumpkin leaves as a protein source and determine the feasibility of these proteins to form complexes with alginate for the encapsulation of folic acid. Different isolation protocols, two based on isoelectric precipitation (one with thermal pretreatment and the other with alkali pre-extraction) and one based on stepwise precipitation with ammonium sulfate, were compared regarding the yield and structural properties of the obtained leaf protein concentrates (LPC). The highest purity of protein was achieved using the thermal-acid protocol and the salting-out protocol at 40% saturation.

The aim of this study was to investigate covalent immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on magnetic nanoparticles (Mag) encapsulated in calcium alginate beads (MABs) for color degradation, combining easy and fast removal of biocatalyst from the reaction mixture due to its magnetic properties and strong binding due to surface alginate functional groups. This study presents the state-of-art research about the assembly of soy proteins in nanocarriers, liposomes, and its design includes different physicochemical strategies and approaches: two-step enzymatic hydrolysis of soy concentrate, hydrolysate encapsulation by using phospholipids and cholesterol, and application of ultrasonication. Achieved results revealed that ultrasonication, together with cholesterol addition into phospholipid layers, improved the stability of nanoliposomes, and a maximum value of 60.5 % was obtained.

Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drugs in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration and heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Higher total powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% /) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of lyophilization and higher total powder yield in case of spray drying by diminishing material deposition on the wall of the drying chamber.

We have tested in vitro effects of hemoglobin from bovine slaughterhouse blood (BHb) on stromal cells of mesodermal origin, with an aim to explore its use as a component of cell culture media. Human peripheral blood mesenchymal stromal cells (PB-MSCs) and three mouse cell lines (ATDC5, MC3T3-E1 and 3T3-L1) were employed to study BHb effects on their growth and migration. The cells multilineage differentiation capacity in the presence of BHb was evaluated after induced differentiation, by histochemical staining and by RT-PCR analysis of the expression of genes specific for chondrogenic, adipogenic and osteogenic lineages.
