Investigation of 29 Antimicrobial Compounds in Soil Using Newly Developed UHPLC-MS/MS Method.

While the prudent and reasonable use of veterinary antimicrobial agents in food-producing animals is necessary, researchers over the decades have shown that these antimicrobial agents can spread into the environment through livestock manure and wastewater. The analysis of the occurrence of antimicrobial compounds in soil samples is of a great importance to determine potential impacts on human and animal health and the environment. In this study, an affordable, rugged and simple analytical method has been developed for the determination of twenty-nine antimicrobial compounds from five different classes (tetracyclines, fluoro(quinolones), macrolides, sulfonamides and diaminopirimidines).

Probing the Dual-Route Model of the SNARC Effect by Orthogonalizing Processing Speed and Depth.

The dual-route model explains the SNARC (Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes) effect assuming two routes of parallel information processing: the unconditional route (automatic activation of pre-existing links) and the conditional route (activation of task-specific links). To test predictions derived from this model, we evaluated whether response latency in superficial number processing modulates the SNARC effect in a color task (participants judged the color of a number). In Experiment 1, participants performed a parity task, an easy color task (short RTs), and a difficult color task (RTs similar to those of the parity task).

(1) Background: Accessory liver lobes are a rare finding and only a few case reports of accessory liver lobes in abdominal wall defects have been reported so far. In the case of a congenital wall defect including liver parenchyma, there is still an ongoing debate on the definition of the abdominal wall defect and best care practice. Even though congenital abdominal wall defects are frequently diagnosed in prenatal screenings, controversy on the underlying etiology, embryology and underlying anatomy remains.

Ultrasound Markers in Fetal Hydronephrosis to Predict Postnatal Surgery.

Purpose:  Parents confronted with the finding of antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH) are particularly interested in whether their baby will need postnatal surgery. The objective of this study was to predict ANH requiring surgery on the basis of the fetal anteroposterior renal pelvic diameter (APRPD) and the Society for Fetal Urology (SFU) grading system.

Materials And Methods:  The medical records of 179 patients with the finding of ANH were reviewed retrospectively.

Sacrococcygeal Teratoma Presenting with Vaginal Discharge and Polyp in an Infant.

Background: Sacrococcygeal teratoma accounts for the most common solid tumor in neonates. Because of improved technology, 50%-70% of cases can be diagnosed antenatally during routine ultrasound screenings. If not diagnosed antenatally, clinical findings at birth are distinct in most cases including a palpable or visible mass.

Laparoscopic Management of Autoamputated Ovary in Newborns: A Report of 2 Cases.

Intrauterine autoamputation of the ovary is an extremely rare diagnosis in the pediatric population. The current literature is limited to contradictory recommendations, while a standard management protocol for autoamputated adnexa secondary to intrauterine ovarian torsion is yet to be established. We report 2 cases of auto-amputation of the ovary, leading to a free-floating intra-abdominal cyst in the newborn.

Open-label simultaneous radio-chemotherapy of glioblastoma multiforme with topotecan in adults.

Background: Due to its radioresistance, the prognosis of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) remains poor. Therefore, we investigated the impact of simultaneous radio-chemotherapy with topotecan (Hycamtin) on clinical outcome, tolerability and quality of life.

Patients And Methods: In this multicenter trial, 60 patients (19 females, 41 males) with histologically proven (5x biopsy, 31x subtotal resection, 24x total resection) GBM were included.

Bendamustine as salvage treatment in patients with advanced progressive breast cancer: a phase II study.

A phase II pilot study of bendamustine as salvage treatment in patients with advanced breast cancer was performed to determine the objective response rates and make further observations on the toxicity of this drug. A group of 37 patients, pretreated with chemotherapy for advanced disease, entered the trial. Treatment consisted of 150 mg/m2 bendamustine on days 1 and 2 of a 4-week treatment course.

Sequence analysis of pre-ferredoxin-NADP(+)-reductase cDNA from Cyanophora paradoxa specifying a precursor for a nucleus-encoded cyanelle polypeptide.

A cDNA clone for pre-ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase (FNR) was obtained by screening a Cyanophora paradoxa expression library with antibodies specific for cyanelle FNR. The 1.4 kb transcript was derived from a single-copy gene.

rps10, unreported for plastid DNAs, is located on the cyanelle genome of Cyanophora paradoxa and is cotranscribed with the str operon genes.

rps10, encoding the plastid ribosomal protein S10, is a nuclear gene in higher plants and green algae, and is missing from the large ribosomal protein gene cluster of chlorophyll b-type plastids that contains components of the prokaryotic S10, spc and alpha operons. The cyanelle genome of Cyanophora paradoxa is shown to harbor rps10 as another specific feature of its organization. However, this novel plastid gene is not contiguous with the genes of the "S10" operon, but is adjacent to, and cotranscribed with, the str operon, a trait also found in archaebacteria.

The petFI gene encoding ferredoxin I is located close to the str operon on the cyanelle genome of Cyanophora paradoxa.

The petFI gene encoding ferredoxin I was localized in the large single copy region of cyanelle DNA by heterologous hybridization. Sequence analysis revealed an ORF of 99 amino acids (including the N-terminal processed methionine) at a position 477 bp from the 3' end of tufA but on the opposite strand. The 25 amino-terminal residues well corresponded to partial sequences obtained with purified cyanelle ferredoxin.

[Value of digital subtraction angiography in the imaging of a subcutaneously implanted, intra-arterial chemotherapy catheter].

Intraarterial chemotherapy is already a commonly accepted treatment method in isolated liver metastases. The high risk of transcutaneous injection of chemotherapeutic substances in the implanted catheter system requires a passage examination before the beginning of therapy. 32 digital subtraction angiograms for examination and documentation of the implanted catheter have been performed in 15 patients.

[Optimized treatment planning in 60Co therapy: application of a schedule for irradiation of the lateral lymphatic areas of the neck by means of a programmable pocket computer (author's transl)].

The present program for irradiation of the lymphatics at the neck is yielding good results with reasonable expenditure. The shape of the neck can be shown not to influence the isodose curves. Thus, it is possible to use a programmable pocket computer for calculation of the irradiation.

[Solitary plasmacytoma of the scapula and clavicle].

A 59 year old female patient with a large solitary medullary plasmocytoma of two years duration of the right scapula and clavicle is presented. The patient refused operation and received telecobalt radiation therapy. The palpable swelling and pain disappeared.
