Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DP IV, CD26) plays an essential role in the activation and proliferation of lymphocytes, which is shown by the immunosuppressive effects of synthetic DP IV inhibitors. Similarly, both human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) Tat protein and the N-terminal peptide Tat(1-9) inhibit DP IV activity and T cell proliferation. Therefore, the N-terminal amino acid sequence of HIV-1 Tat is important for the inhibition of DP IV.

The role of the side chain in 5'-substituted analogues of naltrindole has been further explored with the synthesis of series of amides, amidines, and ureas. Amidines (8, 13) had greatest selectivity for the kappa receptor, as predicted from consideration of the message-address concept. It was also found that an appropriately located carbonyl group, in ureas (10) and amides (7), led to retention of affinity and antagonist potency at the delta receptor.

This paper presents a model study into the effect of varied frequencies (10-60 Hz) of vertical and horizontal vibrations at a constant acceleration of 1g for 60-min. exposures on the changes in the salt system of milk. It was found that the tendencies of changes in the salt system of milk under vertical and horizontal vibrations are similar and are determined by the applied frequency.

This paper presents a model study into the effect of vibration on the changes in the nitrogen compound system of whole milk. It was found that milk protein destabilization increases with an increase in vibration frequency. Moreover, it was observed that in skimmed milk obtained from whole milk subjected to vibration, the total and dissolved nitrogen contents and the casein dehydration degree tended to decrease while the NPN+PPN level increased.

The protein kinase C (PKC)-mediated phosphorylation of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase alpha-subunit has been shown to play an important role in regulation of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity. In the rat alpha1-subunit, phosphorylation occurs at Ser-23 and results in inhibition of the transport function of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase, which is mimicked by replacing the Ser-23 by the negatively charged glutamic acid or by aspartic acid. Using comparative molecular modeling, we investigated whether phosphorylation or acidic replacement at position 23 causes a dramatic change in the molecular electrostatic potential at position 23 as a result of insertion of a negative charge of the phosphoryl group or Glu per se, or whether, alternatively, the modification causes larger-scale conformational changes in the N-terminus of the alpha-subunit.

With respect to the mechanism of chaperone-like activity, we examined the behavior of haptoglobin under heat shock conditions. Secondary structure changes during heat treatment were followed by circular dichroism, Raman and infrared spectroscopy. A model of the haptoglobin tetramer, based on its sequence homology with serine proteases and the CCP modules, has been proposed.

With the aim of identifying possible gene targets for direct or indirect regulation by vasopressin in the renal medulla, we have carried out cDNA array experiments in inner medullas of Brattleboro rats infused with the V(2) receptor-selective vasopressin analog desamino-Cys1,d-Arg8 vasopressin (dDAVP) for 72 h. Of the 1,176 genes on the array, 137 transcripts were increased by 2-fold or more, and 10 transcripts were decreased to 0.5-fold or less.

This treatment was shown not to disrupt yeast cells, as NaOH-extracted cells displayed a normal morphology upon electron microscopy. The primary specificity of papain-like cysteine proteases (family C1, clan CA) is determined by S2-P2 interactions. Despite the high amino acid sequence identities and structural similarities between cathepsins K and L, only cathepsin K is capable of cleaving interstitial collagens in their triple helical domains. The aim of the present study was to analyze mass spectra of scorpions belonging to the genus Parabuthus (Pocock 1890) by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) and to construct a species-specific venom code for species identification. The venom compositions of sixteen Parabuthus species, occurring in southern Africa, were characterized using representative peaks in the molecular mass range of 6400-8400 Da. This mass range is characteristic for the typical long-chain neurotoxins influencing sodium channels.

A heat-soluble protein present in substantial quantities in Typha latifolia pollen was purified to homogeneity. The protein was subjected to cyanogen bromide cleavage, and the peptides produced were separated by HPLC chromatography and sequenced. The two sequences determined were found to be related to the putative D76 LEA protein from Brassica napus seeds and one of them to the D-7 LEA protein from upland cotton.

High-resolution x-ray observations of the prototype starburst galaxy Messier 82 (M82) obtained with the advanced CCD (charge-coupled device) imaging spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory provide a detailed view of hot plasma and energetic processes. Plasma with temperature of about 40,000,000 kelvin fills the inner 1 kiloparsec, which is much hotter than the 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 kelvin interstellar medium component in the Milky Way Galaxy. Produced by many supernova explosions, this central region is overpressurized and drives M82's prominent galactic wind into the intergalactic medium.

Objective: This is the report about a very early onset of phenytoin hypersensitivity reaction showing respiratory insufficiency, fever, hepatic and skin reactions in a 68-year-old male patient who was concomitantly treated with high dose dexamethasone/prednisolone because of brain edema.

Case Report: The patient developed a hypersensitivity reaction one week after starting a phenytoin treatment, 250 mg daily intravenously, because of a focal epileptic seizure after a transsphenoidal resection of a pituitary tumor. The drug hypersensitivity was diagnosed first clinically and was confirmed by an in vitro rechallenge using the lymphocyte transformation test three months later.
