Background: Patients with bipolar disorders (BD) have significant impairments in Facial Expression Recognition (FER), an essential social skill for effective social interactions. While the Facial Emotions Recognition Test, 54 photographs by Gaudelus (TREF-54g) has been used in patients with schizophrenia, no study has evaluated FER using this test in BD patients. The TREF-54g meets the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) criteria for assessing FER.

Background: Diminished uptake of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) has been observed in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) but little statistical contrast of the regional brain deficits has been undertaken. This study examined prefrontal cortex inter-regional Brodmann area differences to delineate patterns associated with behavioral, neurotransmitter, and general toxicity hypotheses of cerebral involvement in AUD.

Both autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia are often characterized as disorders of white matter integrity. Multimodal investigations have reported elevated metabolic rates, cerebral perfusion and basal activity in various white matter regions in schizophrenia, but none of these functions has previously been studied in ASD. We used fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography to compare white matter metabolic rates in subjects with ASD (n = 25) to those with schizophrenia (n = 41) and healthy controls (n = 55) across a wide range of stereotaxically placed regions-of-interest.

Several models have been proposed to account for observed overlaps in clinical features and genetic predisposition between schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder. This study assessed similarities and differences in topological patterns and vectors of glucose metabolism in both disorders in reference to these models. Background: This study assesses the benefits of an individualized therapy (RECOS program) compared with the more general cognitive remediation therapy (CRT).

Methods: 138 participants took part with 65 randomized to CRT and 73 to RECOS. In the RECOS group, participants were directed towards one of five training modules (verbal memory, visuo-spatial memory and attention, working memory, selective attention or reasoning) corresponding to their key cognitive concern whereas the CRT group received a standard program.

Here, we elucidate a mechanism of colon carcinoma cell migration that is supported by the cell surface tetraspanin Co-029 (tspan8), which is known to favor tumor progression and metastasis. This mechanism is unmasked by silencing of E-cadherin or its associated adapter molecule p120-catenin (p120ctn), and it involves a switch in signaling between the collagen-binding integrins α(1)β(1) and α(2)β(1).

Mass spectrometry imaging has been used to map liver biopsies of several patients suffering from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This steatosis is characterized by an accumulation of triacylglycerols and diacylglycerols in the liver. Using time-of-flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) with a bismuth cluster ion source, it has been possible to map lipids in situ at the micrometer scale and to simultaneously characterize their molecular distribution on liver sections.

Background: An increasing interest in the study of cognition in Schizophrenia has developed within the last few years although cognitive problems have been described in this disorder since the beginning of the 20th century. A 63-year-old woman treated with prednisone for sinusitis developed fulminant liver failure due to a clinically unsuspected primary varicella zoster virus infection. The diagnosis of herpetic hepatitis was made from a liver biopsy, and varicella zoster virus viremia was detected by polymerase chain reaction. She was treated successfully with transplantation and perioperative administration of acyclovir.

Nodular regenerative hyperplasia is one of the causes of noncirrhotic portal hypertension and has recently been described in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, and the potential role of a prothrombotic state and hepatotoxic antiretroviral medication has been suggested. Moreover, it is now established that liver transplantation is feasible in HIV-infected patients. We describe here our experience concerning 3 HIV-infected patients with severe complications of nodular regenerative hyperplasia treated with liver transplantation.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of cetuximab in the palliative treatment of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas (CCA) unresponsive to first-line gemcitabine-oxaliplatin (GEMOX) pretreatment.

Methods: Nine patients (mean age: 54 years) with recurrent or unresectable CCA (6 peripheral and 3 hilar CCA, histologically proven) resistant to GEMOX received cetuximab 400 mg/m2 on day 1 then 250 mg/m2 weekly combined with gemcitabine 1,000 mg/m2 on day 1 and oxaliplatin 85 mg/m2 on day 2, every 3 weeks. The epidermal growth factor receptor, a transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase of the erbB family, is expressed in 15-30% of all breast cancers. Anti-epidermal growth factor receptor agent cetuximab is an IgG1 chimeric monoclonal antibody with a potent antitumor activity. Cetuximab competes with ligand binding to the epidermal growth factor receptor ectodomain, resulting in an efficient blockade of tumor-promoting downstream signaling pathways.
