Persistently high marine temperatures are escalating and threating marine biodiversity. The Baltic Sea, warming faster than other seas, is a good model to study the impact of increasing sea surface temperatures. Zostera marina, a key player in the Baltic ecosystem, faces susceptibility to disturbances, especially under chronic high temperatures.

HER2-low and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes in triple-negative breast cancer: Are they connected?

Most patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) are not candidates for targeted therapy, leaving chemotherapy as the primary treatment option. Recently, immunotherapy has demonstrated promising results in TNBC, due to its immunogenicity. In addition, a novel antibody-drug conjugate, namely, trastuzumab-deruxtecan, has shown effectiveness in TNBC patients with low-HER2 expression (HER2-low).

Preclinical anti-tumour activity of HexaBody-CD38, a next-generation CD38 antibody with superior complement-dependent cytotoxic activity.

Background: HexaBody®-CD38 (GEN3014) is a hexamerization-enhanced human IgG1 that binds CD38 with high affinity. The E430G mutation in its Fc domain facilitates the natural process of antibody hexamer formation upon binding to the cell surface, resulting in increased binding of C1q and potentiated complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC).

Methods: Co-crystallization studies were performed to identify the binding interface of HexaBody-CD38 and CD38.

Estimating monthly labour force figures during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands.

Official monthly statistics about the Dutch labour force are based on the Dutch Labour Force Survey (LFS). The LFS is a continuously conducted survey that is designed as a rotating panel design. Data collection among selected households is based on a mixed-mode design that uses web interviewing, telephone interviewing and face-to-face interviewing.

HER2-low breast cancer shows a lower immune response compared to HER2-negative cases.

Currently, the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status of breast cancer is classified dichotomously as negative or positive to select patients for HER2-targeted therapy. However, with the introduction of novel treatment options, it is important to get more insight in the biology of cancers with low HER2 expression. Therefore, we studied several clinicopathologic characteristics in relation to the level of HER2 expression (HER2- versus HER2low).

Multivariate Density Estimation by Neural Networks.

We propose nonparametric methods to obtain the Probability Density Function (PDF) to assess the properties of the underlying data generating process (DGP) without imposing any assumptions on the DGP, using neural networks (NNs). The proposed NN has advantages compared to well-known parametric and nonparametric density estimators. Our approach builds on literature on cumulative distribution function (CDF) estimation using NN.

Introduction: Several countries advocate screening for aneurysms of the abdominal aorta (AAA) in selected patients. In the Netherlands, routine screening is currently under review by the National Health Council. In any screening programme, cost-efficiency and accuracy are key.

Achieving enteral nutrition during the acute phase in critically ill children: Associations with patient characteristics and clinical outcome.

Background & Aims: In the absence of methodologically sound randomized controlled trials (RCTs), current recommendations for timing and amount of enteral nutrition (EN) in critically ill children are based on observational studies. These studies have associated achievement of a higher EN intake in critically ill children with improved outcome. Inherent to the observational design of these underlying studies, thorough insight in possible confounding factors to correct for is essential.

DuoHexaBody-CD37, a novel biparatopic CD37 antibody with enhanced Fc-mediated hexamerization as a potential therapy for B-cell malignancies.

Tetraspanin CD37 has recently received renewed interest as a therapeutic target for B-cell malignancies. Although complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) is a powerful Fc-mediated effector function for killing hematological cancer cells, CD37-specific antibodies are generally poor inducers of CDC. To enhance CDC, the E430G mutation was introduced into humanized CD37 monoclonal IgG1 antibodies to drive more efficient IgG hexamer formation through intermolecular Fc-Fc interactions after cell surface antigen binding.

Response of foundation macrophytes to near-natural simulated marine heatwaves.

Marine heatwaves have been observed worldwide and are expected to increase in both frequency and intensity due to climate change. Such events may cause ecosystem reconfigurations arising from species range contraction or redistribution, with ecological, economic and social implications. Macrophytes such as the brown seaweed Fucus vesiculosus and the seagrass Zostera marina are foundation species in many coastal ecosystems of the temperate northern hemisphere.

[Acquired undescended testes: treatment and consequences for future fertility].

1-3% of boys develop an acquired undescended testes (UDT), meaning that the testes cannot be returned into the scrotum after previously having been located in a stable scrotal position. Fertility issues for patients with acquired UDT are comparable to those for patients with congenital UDT. Hypothetically speaking, patients with acquired UDT are at lower risk of testicular cancer than patients with congenital UDT.

Heat waves and their significance for a temperate benthic community: A near-natural experimental approach.

Climate change will not only shift environmental means but will also increase the intensity of extreme events, exerting additional stress on ecosystems. While field observations on the ecological consequences of heat waves are emerging, experimental evidence is rare, and lacking at the community level. Using a novel "near-natural" outdoor mesocosms approach, this study tested whether marine summer heat waves have detrimental consequences for macrofauna of a temperate coastal community, and whether sequential heat waves provoke an increase or decrease of sensitivity to thermal stress.

INSL3 and AMH in patients with previously congenital or acquired undescended testes.

Background: In previous reports no differences in Leydig and Sertoli cell function were found between congenital undescended testis (CUDT) and acquired UDT (AUDT) on the basis of serum levels of LH, testosterone, FSH or inhibin B. This study tried to detect differences in Leydig and Sertoli cell function between CUDT and AUDT using insulin-like peptide 3 (INSL3) and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH).

Method: 118 men with a history of UDT (CUDT N=55 (6/55 bilateral), AUDT N=63 (15/63 bilateral)) were investigated.

Seagrasses colonized the sea on at least three independent occasions to form the basis of one of the most productive and widespread coastal ecosystems on the planet. Here we report the genome of Zostera marina (L.), the first, to our knowledge, marine angiosperm to be fully sequenced.

Scrotal ultrasound findings in previously congenital and acquired unilateral undescended testes and their contralateral normally descended testis.

The aim of this study was to report on different anomalies found by physical examination and scrotal ultrasound in men with previously unilateral congenital undescended testes (UDT; N = 50), acquired UDT (N = 49), their contralateral normally descended testis (CNDT) and control testes (N = 53). Acquired UDT significantly more often had a testicular volume being <15 mL than congenital UDT (88% vs. 68%).

The aim of this study was to evaluate testicular function in men with previous acquired undescended testis (UDT) in whom orchiopexy was performed at diagnosis compared with a similar group of men in whom spontaneous descent was awaited until puberty. Secondly, we examined the influence of age at orchiopexy on fertility parameters in adult life. A total of 169 men of the 'orchiopexy at diagnosis' group and 207 men of the 'wait and see' protocol group were invited for participation.

Three-dimensional histologic validation of high-resolution SPECT of antibody distributions within xenografts.

Unlabelled: Longitudinal imaging of intratumoral distributions of antibodies in vivo in mouse cancer models is of great importance for developing cancer therapies. In this study, multipinhole SPECT with sub-half-millimeter resolution was tested for exploring intratumoral distributions of radiolabeled antibodies directed toward the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) and compared with full 3-dimensional target expression assessed by immunohistochemistry.

Methods: (111)In-labeled zalutumumab, a human monoclonal human EGFr-targeting antibody, was administered at a nonsaturating dose to 3 mice with xenografted A431 tumors exhibiting high EGFr expression.

Disentangling mode-specific selection and measurement bias in social surveys.

A large-scale mixed-mode experiment linked to the Dutch Crime Victimization Survey was conducted in 2011. The experiment consisted of two waves; one wave with random assignment to one of the modes web, paper, telephone and face-to-face, and one follow-up wave to the full sample with interviewer modes only. The objective of the experiment is to estimate total mode effects and more specifically the corresponding mode effect components arising from undercoverage, nonresponse and measurement.

Fertility potential in men with a history of congenital undescended testes: a long-term follow-up study.

Men with a history of congenital undescended testes (UDT) have an increased risk of fertility problems. Despite no definitive proof, current guidelines recommend early surgical intervention because this may have a positive effect on future fertility potential by preventing degenerative changes of the testes in early life. Also surgical intervention facilitates observability of the testes in view of possible malignancy.

Patients And Methods: A review of 139 boys with 158 congenital UDT and 69 boys with 84 acquired UDT was performed. The most caudal testicular position preoperatively, testis position at surgery, patency of the processus vaginalis and epididymal anomalies were prospectively recorded.

Surgical findings in acquired undescended testis: an explanation for pubertal descent or non-descent?

Aim: Surgical findings were studied to find an explanation for the phenomenon that some acquired undescended testes (UDT) descend spontaneously whereas others need orchiopexy.

Methods: In patients with acquired UDT spontaneous descent was awaited until at least Tanner stage P2G2. Orchiopexy was performed when a stable scrotal position had not been achieved by the end of follow-up.
