Background: Cardiology training is demanding and associated with high workloads. Poor lifestyle and health among clinicians may stretch workforces and impact patient care. It has not been established what impact training in cardiology has on the doctors undertaking it.

Background Post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) fractional flow reserve ≥0.90 is an accepted marker of procedural success, and a cutoff of ≥0.95 has recently been proposed for post-PCI instantaneous wave-free ratio.

While a significant proportion of the population suffer from migraine, the existing research literature does not provide a clear indication as to whether migraineurs experience objective cognitive deficits outside of acute migraine attacks. This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate which cognitive domains if any were affected by migraine, by synthesising the existing research quantitatively. The meta-analysis was prospectively registered with the PROSPERO International prospective register of systematic reviews (registration no.

Background Adenosine is used to treat no-reflow in the infarct-related artery (IRA) during ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction intervention. However, the physiological effect of adenosine in the IRA is variable. Coronary steal-a reduction of blood flow to the distal coronary bed-can occur in response to adenosine and this is facilitated by collaterals.

Article Synopsis
  • Incretin therapies, specifically GLP-1, have shown potential for improving heart health in diabetic patients, but the exact ways they work are still unclear.
  • In a study involving 41 patients undergoing procedures for stable angina, researchers compared the effects of GLP-1 infusion with a placebo and theophylline, a drug that affects adenosine levels.
  • Results indicated that GLP-1 effectively reduced measures of coronary resistance without the influence of adenosine levels, suggesting its vasodilatory effects work independently of adenosine pathways.

Background: Losses to follow-up impact the collection of outcomes among patients with alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS). We aimed to study the feasibility and acceptability of using telephonic contact as a means of following up new patients with ADS. The outcomes assessed were complete abstinence at the end of 6 months and associated factors.

Objective: To assess the quality of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training in family medicine residency programs and to obtain the opinions of current family medicine residents on the role of ultrasound in primary care.

Design: A 23-question online survey conducted using SurveyMonkey between March 15 and June 30, 2017.

Setting: Canada.

Background: The incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) has been shown to protect against lethal ischemia-reperfusion injury in animal models and against nonlethal ischemia reperfusion injury in humans. Furthermore, GLP-1 receptor agonists have been shown to reduce major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in large-scale studies. We sought to investigate whether GLP-1 reduced percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)-associated myocardial infarction (PMI) during elective PCI.

Objective: To assess the current state of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training in Canadian family medicine residency programs.

Design: Cross-sectional survey to evaluate POCUS education in accredited Canadian family medicine residency programs; only 1 completed survey was accepted per residency program.

Setting: Seventeen accredited Canadian family medicine residency programs.

Background: We sought to determine whether right ventricular stunning could be detected after supply (during coronary balloon occlusion [BO]) and supply/demand ischemia (induced by rapid pacing [RP] during transcatheter aortic valve replacement) in humans.

Methods And Results: Ten subjects with single-vessel right coronary artery disease undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with normal ventricular function were studied in the BO group. Ten subjects undergoing transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement were studied in the RP group.

The utility of the terms psychosis and neurosis in psychiatry have maintained their dichotomous stance since ages. Clinical observations and etiological hypothesis of psychiatric disorders have kept this polarity intact since the times of Freud and Jung. This case series attempts to revisit this perennial psychiatric controversy.

Background: Available data on the use of the ABSORB bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, CA) in real-world patients is limited. The aim of this study was to assess the mid-term clinical outcomes in a real-world population treated with ABSORB BVS.

Methods And Materials: We retrospectively evaluated all patients treated with ABSORB at Papworth Hospital, Papworth Everard, UK between July 2012 and July 2014.

Cross-cultural studies have demonstrated the utility of the NEO scales in organizing research on personality development (McCrae, 2004). The NEO PI-3 is the latest updated version that has modified item content more suitable to younger populations and to adults with lower literacy levels. The present study examined the utility of the English version of the NEO PI-3 in a multiethnic sample of adults from India (N = 188) by examining mean level data, Cronbach's alpha, retest reliabilities, and construct validity with particular attention given to previous findings that used the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO PI-R) in an Indian sample.

Research indicates that spiritual and religious constructs have the potential to influence a broad range of outcomes such as health, well-being, and meaning, both positively and negatively. This study looked at the effect of an under studied psycho-spiritual approach, Core Transformation (CT), in reducing symptoms and promoting well-being. This study also examined whether the impact of CT would be moderated by age, with older participants evidencing better outcomes.

Introduction: Enhanced recovery pathways are standardized, multidisciplinary, consensus-based tools that provide guidelines for evidence-based decision-making. This study evaluates the impact of the implementation of a clinical care pathway on patient outcomes following radical prostatectomy in a universal healthcare system.

Methods: Medical charts of 200 patients with prostate cancer who underwent open and minimally invasive radical prostatectomy at a single academic hospital from 2009 to 2012 were reviewed.

Pacemaker infections can be difficult to diagnose, especially when they present with non-specific symptoms and signs a long time after insertion of the device. Unidentified or partially treated low-grade chronic sepsis can result in multisystem disease processes with significant mortality and morbidity. Therefore, a high index of suspicion is required to identify the pacemaker as the source of sepsis and treat it effectively.

Background: It has previously been demonstrated that there is a significant drop in all domains of quality of life among interns during internship.

Aims: A modified version of the health consultant's job stress and satisfaction questionnaire (HCJSSQ) was used to assess and quantify aspects of internship that were perceived as stressful and satisfying. Methods used to cope with work place stress were explored.

Objectives: This study sought to investigate the postdeployment expansion and malapposition characteristics of the bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) in real-world practice.

Background: The material construct of the BVS precludes overexpansion, with consequent potential for scaffold underexpansion and malapposition. In metallic stents, these features are associated with an increased risk of adverse events, including stent thrombosis.

A 61-year-old woman was admitted with general malaise, chest pain and breathlessness. During her inpatient stay she sustained a ventricular fibrillation (VF) arrest which was successfully terminated with direct current cardioversion. Cardiac investigations revealed poor left ventricular systolic function but unequivocally normal coronary arteries.
