Diffractive structures holographically recorded in amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films.

We propose and demonstrate the direct recording of submicrometer relief gratings in amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a -C:H) films by reactive ion etching (RIE) for use as diffractive optical components. The high refractive index of this film and its transparency in the IR make such structures promising candidates for IR-transmission diffractive optical components. The structures are holographically recorded in photoresist and then transferred to a thin aluminum layer that is used as a mask for RIE of the a -C:H films.

Association between particular polymorphic residues on apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA-1) and platelet levels in patients with vivax malaria.

Naturally acquired antibodies to five variants of the merozoite surface protein 2 (MSP-2), a target of clinical immunity to Plasmodium falciparum malaria, were measured in a cohort of rural Amazonians. Using qualitative methodology and theoretical reference of interpersonal communication, the research was developed through interviews with 13 professors with experience both in teaching activities and communication research in Nursing. Interviewees reported that they follow their students' progress in communicative competence through the observation of their communicative abilities with patients; by fostering moments for the expression of thoughts, feelings and perceptions; by giving feedback on the development of communicative abilities; by stimulating their communication abilities; by performing formative assessments and tutoring.

Antibodies to Plasmodium vivax apical membrane antigen 1: persistence and correlation with malaria transmission intensity.

The antibody responses to the apical membrane antigen 1 of the Plasmodium vivax (PvAMA-1) were investigated in subjects living in areas of Brazil with different levels of malaria transmission. The prevalence and the levels of IgG to PvAMA-1 increased with the time of exposure. The frequency of a positive response and the mean IgG level were higher in areas where malaria prevalence was more intense, especially among non-infected subjects exposed to moderate transmission over a period of 20 years.

Recording different geometries of 2D hexagonal photonic crystals by choosing the phase between two-beam interference exposures.

2D hexagonal patterns can be generated by the superimposition of two or three fringe patterns that have been formed by two-wave interference and that have rotations of 60 degrees between them. Superimposing three exposures solves the problem of asymmetry in the cross section of structures, which is caused by double exposure. Transdermal delivery of ketoprofen: the influence of drug-dioleylphosphatidylcholine interactions.

Purpose: Considering that most inflammatory diseases occur locally and near the body surface, transdermal delivery of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be an interesting strategy for delivering these drugs directly to the diseased site. To optimize ketoprofen (KP) transdermal delivery we investigated the influence of dioleylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) on skin permeation.

Materials And Methods: The formulations studied were: i) a physical mixture of KP and DOPC and ii) DOPC and KP complex, in a molar ratio of 1:3, obtained by dissolution of the components in chloroform followed by drying under a N2 atmosphere.
