Background: The ACR Commission on Human Resources conducts an annual electronic survey during the first quarter of the year to better understand the present workforce situation for radiologists.
Methods: We used the Practice of Radiology Environment Database (PRED) to identify 2,067 practice leaders and asked them to complete an electronic survey developed by the Commission on Human Resources. The survey asked group leaders or their designates to report the number of radiologists they currently employ or supervise, the number hired in 2012, and the number they plan to hire in 2013 and 2016.
Purpose: No reliable data exist to accurately track trends in the radiology workforce. To fill this void, the ACR Commission on Human Resources undertook an electronic survey to better understand the present workforce situation for radiologists.
Methods: The Practice of Radiology Environment Database(®) of 1,994 practices nationwide was used to identify practice leaders, who were asked to complete an electronic survey internally developed by the commission with the support of an outside consultant.
States are increasingly considering legislative and regulatory avenues to establish the role of radiologist assistants (RAs) under current state medical practice acts or state radiation control regulatory programs. It is critical that radiology practices be cautious to comply with federal and state laws and regulations to ensure that these advanced practice professionals provide the appropriate services under the appropriate level of supervision. For quality-of-care reasons, the ACR remains concerned about the scope of practice of radiology practitioner assistants and some misinformation that has spread to state officials about the assistants' role in radiology practice.
