Low-income, urban-dwelling Black adults are disproportionately affected by traumatic experiences, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression and encounter inequities in treatment access. In addition to the benefits Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for depression, there is preliminary evidence of successful symptom reduction in PTSD via MBCT across two prior pilot studies in veterans. Studies examining the effects of MBCT among trauma-exposed Black adults remains limited, and examination of effects across specific PTSD clusters is almost nonexistent.

Background: Racial discrimination (RD) disrupts regulatory systems in minoritized individuals, particularly those that govern attention, including attention to visceral signals (interoception). RD frequency is linked to physiological "shut down" responses, characterized clinically by dissociation. We examined associations between RD frequency and functional connectivity of attention and interoceptive networks in sample of trauma-exposed Black women, investigating how connectivity alterations associate with dissociation severity.

Addressing the global challenges of climate change and biotic invasions requires understanding their interactions and implications for natural resource management. To facilitate and support invasive species management in a changing climate, we review how climate change and invasions interact to impact the planning, action, and outcomes of invasive species management. Climate change is facilitating the introduction of new potential invasive species and altering pathways of introduction and spread, with implications for which species natural resource managers need to assess, monitor, and target.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the relationship between dissociation, a common trauma response, and the microstructure of white matter (WM) in the brain, particularly looking at how brain connectivity may be affected in trauma-exposed women.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 135 women to examine how different facets of dissociation related to fractional anisotropy (FA), a measure of WM integrity, finding significant negative correlations between FA and overall dissociation across several important brain tracts.
  • - The results suggest that greater severity of dissociation is associated with reduced WM integrity in areas linked to sensory processing, emotional regulation, and memory, highlighting potential targets for therapy and neuromodulation interventions.

Previous research has found that both racism and sexual assault are related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and chronic pain. Black women have unique relationships to these stressors situated within contexts of oppression, and little is known about factors that may exacerbate these associations among Black women. Among Black women experiencing both racism and sexual assault (n = 148), emotion clarity moderated the relation between PTSD and chronic pain, β = .

  • The "tens rule" says that about 10% of non-native plants become invasive, but this idea might not be right because it was based on a small study in Great Britain and Australia.
  • A big study analyzed nearly 10,000 plants and found that invasion rates vary a lot around the world; in some places, it can be as low as 7.2% or as high as 33.8%.
  • The study showed that islands have higher invasion rates than mainlands and that tropical areas, thought to be safe from invasions, are actually more vulnerable than expected.

Background: Healthcare utilization for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) is high, but stratifying patients' risk of hospitalization at initial evaluation is challenging. We examined the association between health status at PAD presentation and risk of (1) combined all-cause hospital admissions and emergency department (ED) visits and (2) all-cause hospital admissions.

Methods: Patients with claudication enrolled at US sites in the PORTRAIT registry were included.

On March 25, 2024 an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A H5N1 was identified in dairy cows across multiple farms in the United States. Zoonotic cases originating in individuals with close contact to infected herds and poultry flocks have been subsequently identified. Spillover events such as this raise the specter of recent pandemics including COVID-19 and Mpox and may lead clinical laboratories to assess their capacity for diagnosis of HPAI H5N1.

Unlabelled: Given the cost and unclear clinical impact of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), laboratory stewardship may improve utilization. This retrospective observational study examines mNGS results from two academic medical centers employing different stewardship approaches. Eighty mNGS orders [54 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and 26 plasma] were identified from 2019 to 2021 at the University of Washington (UW), which requires director-level approval for mNGS orders, and the University of Utah (Utah), which does not restrict ordering.

Introduction history, including propagule pressure and residence time, has been proposed as a primary driver of biological invasions. However, it is unclear whether introduction history increases the likelihood that a species will be invasive or only the likelihood that it will be established. Using a dataset of non-native species historically available as ornamental plants in the conterminous United States, we investigated how introduction history relates to these stages of invasion.

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are promising candidates for use as biomicrorobots in biomedical applications due to their motility, self-propulsion, and the ability to direct their navigation with an applied magnetic field. When in the body, the MTB may encounter non-Newtonian fluids such as blood plasma or mucus. However, their motility and the effectiveness of directed navigation in non-Newtonian fluids has yet to be studied on a single-cell level.

The evolution of facial muscles in dogs has been linked to human preferential selection of dogs whose faces appear to communicate information and emotion. Dogs who convey, especially with their eyes, a sense of perceived helplessness can elicit a caregiving response from humans. However, the facial muscles used to generate such expressions may not be uniquely present in all dogs, but rather specifically cultivated among various taxa and individuals.

Aggression is a costly public health problem with severe and multi-faceted negative consequences and thus, identifying factors that contribute to aggression, particularly in understudied populations, is necessary to develop more effective interventions to reduce the public health cost of aggression. The goal this study was to test whether difficulties regulating emotions moderated the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and aggression in a community sample of predominantly Black females with high levels of trauma exposure. Furthermore, we explored unique relations between PTSD symptom clusters and distinct subscales of difficulties regulating emotions and aggression.

Background: Mood disorders such as major depressive and bipolar disorders, along with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia (SCZ), and other psychotic disorders, constitute serious mental illnesses (SMI) and often lead to inpatient psychiatric care for adults. Risk factors associated with increased hospitalization rate in SMI (H-SMI) are largely unknown but likely involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and socio-behavioral factors. We performed a genome-wide association study in an African American cohort to identify possible genes associated with hospitalization due to SMI (H-SMI).
