Although GHRH has previously been shown to regulate proliferation of breast cancer cells and prevent apoptosis, the intracellular pathways mediating this effect have not been clarified. Exogenous GHRH stimulated a dose-dependent proliferative response within 24 h in MDA-231, as well as in T47D cells and in MCF-7 cells transfected with the GHRH receptor. Physiological sexual responses to an erotic stimulus were assessed using vaginal photoplethysmography, and subjective reactions were measured using questionnaires. Results suggested a curvilinear relationship between state anxiety and physiological sexual arousal (vaginal pulse amplitude; VPA).

The causes of upper airway obstruction during sleep are multi-factorial but there is evidence implicating intrinsic upper airway muscle function and impaired central regulation of the upper airway muscles in the pathophysiology of OSA. The condition is associated with episodic hypoxia due to recurrent apnoea.

The effects of IR1072 and IR880 were investigated, using a range of single and multiple irradiation protocols, for their effect on freshly prepared human lymphocytes stimulated with phytohemagglutinin. Viable cell numbers remained significantly higher after irradiation with IR1072 and were significantly lower after IR880 irradiation compared to untreated controls, following a daily single irradiation over a 5-day period.

Prostacyclin analogues reduce pulmonary pressures in this condition; raising the possibility that cycloxygenase-2 (COX-2) modulates the response of the pulmonary vasculature to hypoxia.

The prevalence and pathogenesis of increased haematocrit and pulmonary hypertension is controversial and it has been suggested that these changes only occur in patients who also have daytime continuous hypoxaemia. The hypothesis tested here is that the chronic intermittent hypoxia and asphyxia associated with sleep-disordered breathing causes erythropoiesis and pulmonary hypertension and that this occurs in the absence of periods of continuous hypoxia.

Utilizing a transient transfection approach and the GH4 rat pituitary cell line, we have shown that Ets- 1 acts synergistically with the pituitary-specific POU homeodomain transcription factor, Pit-1, to mediate basal and Ras-induced regulation of the proximal (-425) rat PRL (rPRL) promoter. Although the transient transfection approach has provided important information regarding rPRL proximal promoter regulation, the role of Ets factors in the regulation of the intact, endogenous PRL promoter has not been explored.

The GCS verbal component may be misleading in acute stroke: a focal neurological deficit leading to dysphasia could affect the score, independently of level of consciousness.
