A new approach for the analysis of particulate matter by radio frequency glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (rf-GD-OES) is described. Dispersion of the particles in a sol-gel sample matrix provides a convenient means of generating a thin film suitable for sputter-sampling into the discharge. Acid-catalyzed sol-gel glasses synthesized from tetramethyl orthosilicate were prepared and spun-cast on glass substrates.
