We demonstrate the feasibility of making antireflection coatings (ARCs) for terahertz (THz) light using multilayered polymer films from commercial adhesive tapes. Efficient and low-cost ARCs in the THz range are not conveniently available. Our economical approach can mitigate many of the experimental challenges posed by Fresnel reflection.

Oral alkalization with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO ) or citrate is prescribed for conditions ranging from metabolic acidosis to nephrolithiasis. Although most nephrologists/urologists use this method routinely, extracellular volume (ECV) increase is the main feared adverse event reported for NaHCO . Thus far, no trial has specifically studied this issue in a real-world setting.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on a 4-generation family with Hyperparathyroidism-Jaw Tumor syndrome (HPT-JT) linked to a specific deletion in the CDC73 gene, revealing variable clinical presentations among family members.
  • Of the 24 relatives studied, 13 had the gene deletion, with about 50% of individuals showing symptoms of hyperparathyroidism by age 40, leading to surgery in seven patients for parathyroid adenomas.
  • Findings included high calcium levels, kidney issues in over half the patients, presence of atypical adenomas, and notable variations in disease expression, even among identical twins, indicating genetics play a significant role in disease severity and manifestation.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 poses significant risks for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), with a study showing 5.5% of 2336 dialysis patients diagnosed with the virus.
  • Among those followed for over 28 days, 37% experienced severe outcomes and 28% died, with oxygen therapy and decreased lymphocyte counts identified as major risk factors.
  • The study noted that chronic use of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) may protect against mortality, while treatments like azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine showed no benefit for patients with COVID-19.

Objective: Low skeletal muscle mass has emerged as a risk factor for mortality after liver transplantation. We evaluated the prognostic value of muscle mass on length of hospitalization and adverse outcomes after kidney transplantation in aging end-stage renal disease patients.

Methods: One hundred twenty-two patients aged 60 years or older at the time of transplantation were retrospectively analyzed.

We report the first case of COVID-19 pneumonia in a preterm neonate in Mayotte, an overseas department of France. The newborn developed an acute respiratory distress by 14 days of life with bilateral ground glass opacities on a chest CT scan and a 6-week-long stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This case report emphasizes the need for a cautious and close follow-up period for asymptomatic neonates born to mothers with COVID-19 infection.

The metabolism of homocysteine is complex and involves many enzymes as well as vitamin-derived cofactors. Any dysregulation of this metabolism may lead to hyperhomocysteinemia (HHCy) which is responsible for many clinical disorders including thromboembolic events. HHCy may result from very different etiologies and is generally classified into three groups according to homocysteine concentrations: moderate (<30 µmol/L), intermediate (30-100 µmol/L) or major (>100 μmol/L).

Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common genetic disorder associated with progressive enlargement of the kidneys and liver. ADPKD patients may require renal volume reduction, especially before renal transplantation. The standard treatment is unilateral nephrectomy.

Objective: To identify the factors associated with a good obstetric follow-up and a good perinatal prognosis, in order to adapt the management of pregnant women with addiction to opiates.

Methods: A retrospective study was carried out in our maternity between January 2012 and December 2014, including 104 women who were addicted to opiates, whether or not they were substituted, with or without associated consumptions, regardless of the term of delivery beyond 22 weeks of amenorrhea.

Results: A good obstetrical follow-up was observed by 32.

Acid-base regulation is essential to maintain homeostasis in humans. Carbonic acid/bicarbonate (HCO/HCO) couple is the most predominant extracellular buffer to keep plasma pH within a physiological range. The ability to (re)generate such a buffer is a key milestone that necessitates to understand a precise physiology of both renal tubule and digestive tract.

Objective: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with end-stage renal disease. Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute phase protein and a binding partner for the multiligand receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE). We investigated the role of the interaction between SAA and RAGE in uremia-related atherogenesis.

Introduction: Sepsis is associated with increased mortality, delirium and long-term cognitive impairment in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities occurring at the acute stage of sepsis may correlate with severity of brain dysfunction. Predictive value of early standard EEG abnormalities for mortality in ICU septic patients remains to be assessed.

Hyponatremia could be defined as a public health topic: too many patients are concerned in both hospitalized and general populations; hyponatremia induces lots of clinical outcomes and a great economic burden. Its pathophysiology involves thirst regulation (hypotonic water intakes) and losses regulation (through the kidney under vasopressin control). Diagnostic approach should insure that hyponatremia reflects hypo-osmolality and hypotonicity: first, a false hyponatremia should be ruled out, then a non-hypotonic one.

IgA nephropathy (IgAN), the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide, frequently leads to end-stage renal disease and kidney transplantation. However, disease recurrence often occurs after transplantation. Here we evaluated the predictive value of three markers for IgAN recurrence: the presence of galactose-deficient IgA1, IgG anti-IgA autoantibodies, and IgA-soluble (s) CD89 complexes.

Sales and consumption of refrigerated processed foods of extended durability (REPFEDs) have increased many-fold in Europe over the last 10 years. The safety and quality of these convenient ready-to-eat foods relies on a combination of mild heat treatment and refrigerated storage, sometimes in combination with other hurdles such as mild preservative factors. The major hazard to the microbiological safety of these foods is Clostridium botulinum.

The growth of proteolytic Clostridium botulinum from spore inocula and changes in spore counts in mushroom, broccoli, and potato purées were monitored. Four strains of proteolytic C. botulinum types A and B were inoculated separately at approximately 10(4) spores per ml in nutrient broth and vegetable purées incubated at 15, 20, and 30 degrees C for up to 52 days.

Objective: To date, two randomized, double-blind trials of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) have shown that antidepressant drugs are effective in treating adolescent depression. In contrast, tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are not superior to placebo. This has led to a serotonin hypothesis in this age group.

Epidemiologists as well as professionals working in the area of adolescent health generally agree that adolescence is a period characterized by a difference in frequency of risk-taking behaviour between girls and boys. An explanation of these data through ethno-psychological and psychodynamical approaches is hereby presented. Such approaches should be taken into account for general preventive strategies to take effect.
