Background: Excessive perioperative bleeding is associated with major complications in cardiac surgery, resulting in increased morbidity, mortality, and cost.

Methods: An international expert panel was convened to develop consensus statements on the control of bleeding and management of transfusion and to suggest key quality metrics for cardiac surgical bleeding. The panel reviewed relevant literature from the previous 10 years and used a modified RAND Delphi methodology to achieve consensus.

: Monitoring the anticoagulant effect of unfractionated heparin (UFH) in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients is complex but critically important to balance the risks of treatment related bleeding and circuit thrombosis. While guidelines recommend using more than one method to monitor UFH activity, the use of thromboelastometry (ROTEM) to monitor UFH in ECMO patients has not been investigated in detail.: This is an observational, single-center retrospective study looking at adult ECMO patients on UFH that had ROTEM and thromboelastography (TEG) tests obtained concurrently.

Background: Emergency physicians are well-versed in managing cardiac arrests, including the diagnostic and therapeutic steps after return of spontaneous circulation. Neurologic emergencies are a common cause of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and must remain high in the differential diagnosis, as such cases often require specific interventions that may deviate from more common care pathways. Performing a noncontrast head computed tomography (NCHCT) scan after cardiac arrest has been found to change management, although the optimal timing of this imaging is unclear.

Study Objective: Currently the videographic review of emergency intubations is an unstructured, qualitative process. We created a taxonomy of errors that impede the optimal procedural performance of emergency intubation.

Background: Chest pain is a common presentation to the Emergency Department (ED) with roughly 6 million visits a year. The primary diagnostic modality for the identification of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is the electrocardiogram (ECG), which is used to screen for electrocardiographic findings representing acute coronary occlusion. It is known that the ischemia generated by an acutely occluded coronary vessel generates a wall motion abnormality which can be visualized by echocardiogram; however, emergency physician-performed focused cardiac ultrasound (FOCUS) currently does not have a formal role in the diagnosis of OMI within the emergency department.
