The present translational study aimed to verify whether serial F-FDG PET/CT predicts doxorubicin cardiotoxicity. Fifteen athymic mice were treated intravenously with saline ( = 5) or with 5 or 7.5 mg of doxorubicin per kilogram ( = 5 each) and underwent dynamic small-animal PET beforehand and afterward to estimate left ventricular (LV) metabolic rate of glucose (MRGlu).

Passerini Reactions on Biocatalytically Derived Chiral Azetidines.

The purpose of this study was to explore a series of Passerini reactions on a biocatalytically derived enantiopure azetidine-2-carboxyaldehyde in order to obtain, in a diastereoselective manner, polyfunctionalised derivatives having the potential to be cyclized to chiral bridged bicyclic nitrogen heterocycles. While diastereoselectivity was poor under classical Passerini conditions, a significant increase of diastereoselectivity (up to 76:24) was gained by the use of zinc bromide as promoter. The methodology has a broad scope and yields are always good.

Cryobiology of cephalopod (Illex coindetii) spermatophores.

Cephalopod culture is expected to increase in the near future and sperm cryopreservation would be a valuable tool to guarantee sperm availability throughout the year and to improve artificial insemination programs. We have studied the tolerance of spermatophores from the oceanic squid Illex coindetii to several cryoprotectants, in two toxicity experiments and a cryopreservation test. Five permeating cryoprotectants were tested: Dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO), methanol, glycerol, propylene glycol and ethylene glycol.

A latitudinal cline in the efficacy of endogenous signals: evidence derived from retinal cone contraction in fish.

Like many physiological systems synchronised to the light:dark cycle, retinomotor movements in 'lower' vertebrates are controlled by both the ambient illumination and input from endogenous circadian oscillators. In the present study, we examine the relative influence of these two signals in various species of teleost fish with different latitudes of origin. We find equatorial species show very strong endogenous control.

Risk factors for treatment failure in patients with severe acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema.

Intubation is necessary in 7 to 20% of patients with severe acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema despite optimal treatment. This study evaluated the usefulness of parameters largely available in clinical practice to predict the need for intubation in a population of acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema patients treated with medical therapy and continuous positive airway pressure. The present retrospective cohort study involved 142 patients with severe acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema who were admitted to coronary care or the intensive care unit of a university hospital and were treated by an in-hospital protocol.

Early development of eye and retina in lanternfish larvae.

The morphological characteristics of the eyes and the retinae of lanternfish larvae of Lampanyctus crocodilus, Benthosema glaciale, and Myctophum punctatum were analyzed in pre-flexion, flexion, and post-flexion stages. Pre-flexion larvae of L. crocodilus, the species with the shallowest depth distribution, had spherical eyes located antero-laterally on a strongly laterally-compressed head, suggesting a forward binocular visual field.

Echocardiography-guided pericardiocentesis with probe-mounted needle: report of 53 cases.

Fifty-three pericardiocentesis procedures were performed on 48 patients from 1993 to 2000 at our coronary care unit. Percutaneous puncture (anterior thoracic in 43 cases, subxiphoid in 10 cases) was performed at the site closest to the exploring probe, where the largest amount of fluid was detected. A needle carrier supported by a bracket with two fixed angulations was mounted on the probe.

Retinal ganglion cell topography in elasmobranchs.

Retinal wholemounts are used to examine the topographic distribution of retinal cells within the ganglion cell layer in a range of elasmobranchs from different depths. The retina is examined for regional specializations for acute vision in six species of selachians, Galeocerdo cuvieri, Hemiscyllium ocellatum, Scyliorhinus canicula, Galeus melastomus, Etmopterus spinax, Isistius brasiliensis, one species of batoid, Raja bigelowi and one species of chimaera, Hydrolagus mirabilis. These species represent a range of lifestyles including pelagic, mesopelagic and benthic habitats, living from shallow water to the sea bottom at a depth of more than 3000 m.

Cardiac involvement by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: an unusual presentation of heart conduction disturbances.

A 57-year-old man with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presented with solitary sinus node dysfunction. Superior vena cava syndrome and progressive disturbance of the conduction system requiring dual chamber pacemaker implantation later appeared. Combination chemotherapy and radiation reversed abnormal sinus node function and the AV conduction disturbance, as demonstrated during electrophysiological evaluation.

Occurrence of Salmonella in swine in the Latium Region (central Italy) from 1980 to 1989: a retrospective study.

An extensive survey was carried out on 849 biological samples (dead animals, organs and viscera, faeces, and rectal swabs) from pigs in the Latium Region (Central Italy) throughout the years 1980-1989. In total, 46 of the samples (5.4%) were found to be bacteriologically positive for salmonellae.
