Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive, emerging therapy in surgically high risk, or inoperable patients. Parameters used for risk classification have some deficiencies in the selection of patients. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of TAVI on carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) and N-Terminal pro Brain-type Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) as biomarkers that have been used frequently in recent years, and also the relationship of these biomarkers to prognosis.

Purpose: To report toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) after cataract surgery possibly associated with intracameral use of cefuroxime.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review and analysis on the pre- and postoperative conditions of the subjects who had developed TASS.

Results: The patient group consisted of 17 patients.

Introduction: The dissection of splenic hilar lymph nodes in gastric cancer surgery is indispensable for treating gastric cancers located in the proximal third of the stomach. Splenic vascular injury is a matter of debate resulting on time or delayed splenectomy. We aimed to share our experience and plausible mechanisms causing this complication in two case reports.

Patients with asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis (AS) constitute a heterogeneous group which includes not only certain cases who are at high risk of sudden death and valve-related heart failure, but also those at low risk for these events. Degenerative AS, which includes a majority of patients with AS, is characterized by stricture of the valve, increased arterial stiffness, and diverse left ventricular response to the valvular plus arterial vascular load. In addition to using traditional primary parameters, the severity of AS and the total left ventricular load should be assessed using new measures such as energy loss index and valvulo-arterial impedance.

Objectives: Emerging evidence suggests that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may be a useful marker of inflammation and aortic stiffness. Markers of inflammation and aortic stiffness are both indicators of cardiovascular events. We, therefore, investigated whether the NLR is associated with aortic stiffness in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Objectives: The aim of this single-center study was to assess the incidence and predictors of in-hospital access site complications related to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) performed with new delivery systems in our hospital which has the largest case series in Turkey.

Materials And Method: We performed successful TAVI with the Edwards Sapien XT valve to 127 (46 male) patients via a transfemoral (121), trans-subclavian (5) and transapical (1) approach. Access site complications were defined according to the Valve Academic Research Consortium (VARC) end-point definitions.

Article Synopsis
  • Matrix-producing carcinoma (MPC) is a rare type of breast cancer first identified in 1989, characterized by its direct transition to cartilaginous stroma without the usual spindle cell component.
  • A recent case involved a 43-year-old woman who underwent breast-conserving surgery after a diagnosis of invasive breast carcinoma, later identified as MPC.
  • While the tumor's origin suggests it may come from epithelial cells, its prognosis remains uncertain, highlighting the importance of thorough histopathological evaluation for accurate diagnosis.

Purpose: Thymoquinone (TQ), an active ingredient of black seed oil (Nigella Sativa), has been shown to possess cytotoxic activity against a variety of cancer cell lines. Our purpose was to investigate if the cytotoxic and apoptotic effect of zoledronic acid (ZA) can be enhanced by the addition of the TQ in hormone- and drug-refractory prostate cancer cells PC-3 and DU-145.

Methods: XTT cell proliferation assay was used to assess cytotoxicity; DNA fragmentation and caspase 3/7 activity were also measured.

Through millions of years of evolution, Nature has accomplished the development of highly efficient and sustainable processes and the idea to understand and copy natural strategies is therefore very appealing. However, in spite of intense experimental and computational research, it has turned out to be a difficult task to design efficient biomimetic systems. Here we discuss a novel strategy for the computational design of biomimetic compounds and processes that consists of i) target selection; ii) atomistic and electronic characterization of the wild type system and the biomimetic compounds; iii) identification of key descriptors through feature selection iv) choice of biomimetic template and v) efficient search of chemical and sequence space for optimization of the biomimetic system.

Primary tumors of the paratesticular region are rare, with paratesticular sarcomas constituting a major proportion of these tumors, particularly in the elderly. The paratesticular region consists of mesothelial, various epithelial and mesenchymal cells and may therefore give rise to a number of tumors with various behaviors. Defining the association between the paratesticular mass and the testicle, and differentiation between benign and malignant masses using radiology is challenging, therefore the mass is usually considered to be malignant and radical orchiectomy with high ligation is performed.

Aim: Carotid revascularization is an established theurapeutic modality in preventing stroke and death among patients with severe carotid stenosis. Although carotid endarterectomy remains as the primary option, carotid stenting is accepted as an alternative for patients with high risk for carotid endarterectomy. Recently published reports have better results with proximal protection devices when compared with distal protection devices.

Conventional tracheal reconstruction techniques are not successful at restoring functional units in situations with extensive damage involving more than half the length of the trachea. For the first time, we investigated in vivo tissue-engineered trachea regeneration from a decellularized cadaveric trachea matrix with seeded adult adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and investigated the integration of the matrix into the recipient tracheal side. For the procedure, 1.

Background And Aim: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is common in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). The prognostic effect of PH in high-risk patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) remains unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of TAVI in patients with PH and to determine the effect of TAVI on PH.

Crusted scabies is a rare and highly contagious form of scabies that is characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of mites in the skin, extensive hyperkeratotic scaling, crusted lesions, and variable pruritus. We report the case of a 48-year-old man with an 11-year history of pruritic, hyperkeratotic, psoriasiform plaques and widespread erythematous papules that was diagnosed as crusted scabies.

Case Report. A 15-year-old boy presented to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Education and Research Hospital with the complain of bilateral vision blurring associated with severe glare and photophobia. On ophthalmological examination, uncorrected visual acuity was 20/200 in the right eye and 20/100 in the left eye, and there was no improvement with pinhole testing.

The aim of this study was to compare the central and peripheral pachymetric measurements determined with Sirius system and Visante OCT and evaluate the agreement between them at different stages of keratoconus. Measurements were not significantly different in all patients and subgroups and showed high correlation for the corneal thicknesses of the entire cornea in different stages of keratoconus.
