The literature describes niacinamide, but also postbiotics and peptides, as ingredients that improve skin barrier function, but also affect melanin and sebum levels in individuals. However, the combined effects of these ingredients in a single cosmetic serum have not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, the aim of this randomized controlled study, conducted at the University of Split School of Medicine (Croatia), was to evaluate the effects of cosmetic products containing these active ingredients.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) causes considerable morbidity and mortality rates, posing a major global health burden. The management of the OSCC is multidisciplinary, but still the gold standard is surgical resection and reconstruction of the postablative defect. The appearance of secondary primary OSCC is not uncommon; however, it is quite rare that it appears on the skin of the flap that was used for reconstruction during the previous surgical therapy.

During pregnancy, significant cardiovascular changes occur to accommodate fetal growth, and catestatin may play a role in these changes. Evidence suggests that catestatin, a pleiotropic sympathoinhibitory peptide, is involved in multiple cardiovascular pathologies, including hypertensive disorders. The objective of this study was to compare serum catestatin levels between first-trimester pregnant women and non-pregnant women, aiming to investigate catestatin's role in blood pressure regulation during early pregnancy.

Acutely decompensated heart failure is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation worldwide, with a significant majority of these cases attributed to congestion. Although congestion is commonly mistaken for volume overload, evidence suggests that decompensation can occur without significant water accumulation, being attributed to volume redistribution. Yet, the distinction between intravascular and extravascular congestion in heart failure often blurs, as patients frequently exhibit overlapping features of both, and as patients may transition between phenotypes over time.

Female mosquitoes are reproductively obligate bloodfeeders which feed on vertebrate blood to obtain nutrients required for egg production (driving transmission of vector-borne pathogens in the process), and which rely on plant sugars for their non-reproductive energy requirements. Male mosquitoes, on the other hand, are thought to rely exclusively on plant sugars for their energetic needs; indeed, this dichotomy is one of the central tenets of medical entomology. Here, we show that male and mosquitoes will readily take blood from a membrane feeder when reared under dehydration conditions with no toxic effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on assessing cardiac function in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) since they have a high risk for cardiovascular issues and lack sufficient research on echocardiographic measures in this group.
  • It involved 36 ESRD patients undergoing a transfer from hemodialysis to hemodiafiltration, comparing baseline and 3-month echocardiographic data using various metrics, including global work indices and longitudinal strain.
  • Key findings showed significant differences in some echocardiographic parameters compared to general population standards, but most myocardial work and strain measures did not change significantly after the treatment transfer.

Microneurographic recordings of the human cervical vagus nerve have revealed the presence of multi-unit neural activity with measurable cardiac rhythmicity. This suggests that the physiology of vagal neurones with cardiovascular regulatory function can be studied using this method. Here, the activity of cardiac rhythmic single units was discriminated from human cervical vagus nerve recordings using template-based waveform matching.

  • West Nile virus (WNV) is the most common mosquito-related illness in the USA, and there are no vaccines or treatments for it right now.
  • A study looked at how an insect-specific virus called Eilat virus (EILV) affects WNV in both mosquito cells and real mosquitoes.
  • EILV was able to lower the levels of two different WNV strains in mosquito cells, but in mosquitoes, it helped one strain more than the other over time.

Recently, microRNAs (miR) were identified to have potential links with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) oncogenesis, specifically miR-21. Since HPV is a major risk factor for the development of these diseases, we aimed to search the literature regarding miR-21 expression in both HPV-positive and HPV-negative OSCC/OPSCC. The search was performed in the PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane electronic databases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) remain challenging in terms of understanding their causes and in terms of diagnosing, treating, and monitoring patients. Modern diagnosis combines biomarkers, imaging, and endoscopic methods. Common biomarkers like CRP and fecal calprotectin, while invaluable tools, have limitations and are not entirely specific to IBD.

The diagnosis of acute appendicitis and concurrent surgery referral is primarily based on clinical presentation, laboratory and radiological imaging. However, utilizing such an approach results in as much as 10-15% of negative appendectomies. Hence, in the present study, we aimed to develop a machine learning (ML) model designed to reduce the number of negative appendectomies in pediatric patients with a high clinical probability of acute appendicitis.

Antimicrobial resistance is recognised as one of the top threats healthcare is bound to face in the future. There have been various attempts to preserve the efficacy of existing antimicrobials, develop new and efficient antimicrobials, manage infections with multi-drug resistant strains, and improve patient outcomes, resulting in a growing mass of routinely available data, including electronic health records and microbiological information that can be employed to develop individualised antimicrobial stewardship. Machine learning methods have been developed to predict antimicrobial resistance from whole-genome sequencing data, forecast medication susceptibility, recognise epidemic patterns for surveillance purposes, or propose new antibacterial treatments and accelerate scientific discovery.

The timely introduction and adjustment of the appropriate drug in accordance with previously well-defined treatment goals is the foundation of the approach in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The therapeutic approach is still evolving in terms of the mechanism of action but also in terms of the possibility of maintaining remission. In patients with achieved long-term remission, the question of de-escalation or discontinuation of therapy arises, considering the possible side effects and economic burden of long-term therapy.
