A model of lymphocryptovirus-associated post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder in immunosuppressed Mauritian cynomolgus macaques.

Immunocompromised individuals are at risk for developing lymphocryptovirus-associated lymphoproliferative diseases, such as Epstein Barr virus (EBV)-associated B cell lymphomas and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD). We previously reported development of cynomolgus lymphocryptovirus (CyLCV)-associated PTLD in Mauritian cynomolgus macaques (MCMs) undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), which mirrored EBV-PTLD in transplant patients. Here, we sought to develop a MCM model of lymphocryptovirus-associated lymphoproliferative disease in immunosuppressed MCMs without HSCT.

Automated analysis of operative video in surgical training: scoping review.

Background: There is increasing availability of operative video for use in surgical training. Emerging technologies can now assess video footage and automatically generate metrics that could be harnessed to improve the assessment of operative performance. However, a comprehensive understanding of which technology features are most impactful in surgical training is lacking.

Sex differences in the transcriptional response to acute inflammatory challenge: A randomized controlled trial of endotoxin.

Background: Sex differences in immune-based disorders are well-established, with female sex associated with a markedly heightened risk of autoimmune disease. Female sex is also overrepresented in other conditions associated with elevated inflammation, including depression, chronic pain, and chronic fatigue. The mechanisms underlying these disparities are unclear.

Exploring the effects of lateral pressure to the soft tissue of the buttocks during seating to preserve tissue perfusion.

Aim: Pressure-ulcer occurrence in the seated patient is understudied. Preventative devices have been developed and are prescribed commonly, but there is little quantitative evidence of their effectiveness. This study explores the concept of a lateral pressure device, a prevention device that applies pressure to the sides of the seated buttocks, to reduce the amount of tissue distortion and blood-vessel occlusion.

DigiSpan: Development and Evaluation of a Computer-Based, Adaptive Test of Short-Term Memory and Working Memory.

Purpose: This article describes DigiSpan, a new computer-controlled auditory test of forward and reverse digit span, designed to be administered by clinicians, and presents normative and test-retest reliability data for adults.

Method: DigiSpan mimics conventional live-voice tests in that it commences with trials that ascend in length until a stopping criterion is met, giving rise to a conventional scaled score. It then administers five additional adaptive trials, the length of which depends on the correctness of the response to the previous trial.

A theoretical framework for identifying sociocultural factors that influence nurses' compliance with early warning systems for acute clinical deterioration: A cross-sectional survey.

Background: Systematic adoption of early warning systems in healthcare settings is dependent on the optimal and reliable application by the user. Psychosocial issues and hospital culture influence clinicians' patient safety behaviours.

Objective: (i) To examine the sociocultural factors that influence nurses' EWS compliance behaviours, using a theory driven behavioural model and (ii) to propose a conceptual model of sociocultural factors for EWS compliance behaviour.

Effects of Intranasal Naloxone on Hypoglycemia-Associated Autonomic Failure (HAAF) in Susceptible Individuals.

Context: Hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF), defined as blunting of counter-regulatory hormone and symptom responses to recurrent hypoglycemia, remains a therapeutic challenge in diabetes treatment. The opioid system may play a role in HAAF pathogenesis since activation of opioid receptors induces HAAF. Blockade of opioid receptors with intravenous naloxone ameliorates HAAF experimentally, yet is not feasible therapeutically.

Tobacco use Prevalence in the Military Health System: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction: Tobacco use is prevalent and has traditionally been higher in the U.S. Military population than in the civilian population, but studies are limited.

Phase 1 study of safety and tolerability of an oral contraceptive containing low-dose ethinyl oestradiol combined with glecaprevir/pibrentasvir treatment in healthy premenopausal women.

Glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB) is an approved guideline-recommended chronic hepatitis C virus infection treatment. GLE/PIB coadministration with ethinyl oestradiol (EE) is not recommended in current labels owing to a Phase 1 study observing Grade ≥2 alanine aminotransferase (ALT) elevation in 2 out of 12 healthy women cotreated for 11 days with GLE/PIB and oral contraceptive (OC) containing 35 μg/250 μg EE/norgestimate. No Grade ≥2 elevation was observed with low-dose (20 μg) EE (n = 14).

Introduction to the special issue: evolutionary and biopsychosocial perspectives on sickness communication.

Here, we introduce the EMPH special issue on Evolutionary and Biopsychosocial Perspectives on Sickness Communication. This Commentary provides an overview of each article and places them in the wider context of sickness as a social phenomenon with verbal and nonverbal signals. This Commentary, and the special issue, in general, calls for greater attention to these signals that can affect pathogen transmission and may be at the evolutionary root of our caregiving systems and behaviours.

Prospective Trial of Functional Lung Avoidance Radiation Therapy for Lung Cancer: Quality of Life Report.

Purpose: A novel form of lung function imaging has been developed that uses 4-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) data to generate lung ventilation images (4DCT-ventilation). Functional avoidance uses 4DCT-ventilation to reduce doses to functional lung with the aim of reducing pulmonary side effects. A phase 2, multicenter 4DCT-ventilation functional avoidance clinical trial was completed.

The processing intermediate of human amylin, pro-amylin(1-48), has in vivo and in vitro bioactivity.

Amylin is released by pancreatic beta-cells in response to a meal and its major soluble mature form (37 amino acid-peptide) produces its biological effects by activating amylin receptors. Amylin is derived from larger propeptides that are processed within the synthesizing beta-cell. There are suggestions that a partially processed form, pro-amylin(1-48) is also secreted.

Mitral Regurgitation Complicated by Cardiogenic Shock: Reassessing Risk Stratification and Therapeutic Strategies.

Mitral regurgitation complicated by cardiogenic shock creates a unique and devastating risk profile for patients and poses significant difficulties for physicians who lack a comprehensive range of effective management strategies. Supportive measures such as intravenous vasodilators, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and percutaneous ventricular assist devices are often necessary to stabilize patients prior to definitive treatment with surgical mitral valve replacement or trans-catheter edge-to-edge repair. This review evaluates the evidence for the available supportive and definitive management strategies in patients with mitral regurgitation complicated by cardiogenic shock and presents a framework to aid clinicians in navigating the complex clinical decision-making process.

Independent data collectors decrease bias in the measurement of adherence to anterior cruciate ligament injury prevention programs.

Objectives: Studies on adherence to neuromuscular training (NMT) for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention are frequently biased due to the use of self-reporting by coaches or the athletes themselves. Few NMT studies use data collectors (aside from the athletes or the individuals administering the NMT program) to decrease bias when assessing the adherence of coaches and sports teams. We hypothesized that the use of a data collector who is independent of the team to evaluate adherence to NMT programs would be reliable.

A SARS-CoV-2 NSP7 homolog of a Treg epitope suppresses CD4+ and CD8+ T cell memory responses.

Pathogens escape host defenses by T-cell epitope mutation or deletion (immune escape) and by simulating the appearance of human T cell epitopes (immune camouflage). We identified a highly conserved, human-like T cell epitope in non-structural protein 7 (NSP7) of SARS-CoV-2, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) hetero-tetramer complex. Remarkably, this T cell epitope has significant homology to a T regulatory cell epitope (Tregitope) previously identified in the Fc region of human immunoglobulin G (IgG) (Tregitope 289).

Primary and secondary pre-service teachers' attitudes towards inclusive education.

The practice of inclusive education in schools has led to changes in policy and pedagogy, hence teacher acceptance and attitude are important components of its success. The aim of this study is to identify the differences in attitudes of primary and secondary pre-service teachers on inclusion and the potential relationship between demographic variables such as definitions of inclusion, previous experience working in a school, completion of a module on inclusive schools, and other variables. The study included 548 Australian university students studying primary (n = 348) or secondary (n = 193) professional teaching.

Magnetically-activated, nanostructured cellulose for efficient capture of circulating tumor cells from the blood sample of head and neck cancer patients.

In this report, the relative efficiency of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and nanofibers (CNFs) to capture circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from the blood sample of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients was evaluated. Detection and enumeration of CTCs are critical for monitoring cancer progression. Both types of nanostructured cellulose were chemically modified with Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule (EpCAM) antibody and iron oxide nanoparticles.

The thriving kids and parents schools project: protocol of an incomplete stepped wedged cluster randomised trial evaluating the effectiveness of a Triple P seminar series.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normality of daily life for many children, their families, and schools, resulting in heightened levels of anxiety, depression, social isolation, and loneliness among young people. An integrated public health model of interventions is needed to address the problem and to safeguard the mental health and wellbeing of children. The Triple P - Positive Parenting Program is one system of parenting support with a strong evidence-base and wide international reach.
