Early in the COVID-19 pandemic there was widespread concern that healthcare systems would be overwhelmed, and specifically, that there would be insufficient critical care capacity in terms of beds, ventilators or staff to care for patients. In the UK, this was avoided by a threefold approach involving widespread, rapid expansion of critical care capacity, reduction of healthcare demand from non-COVID-19 sources by temporarily pausing much of normal healthcare delivery, and by governmental and societal responses that reduced demand through national lockdown. Despite high-level documents designed to help manage limited critical care capacity, none provided sufficient operational direction to enable use at the bedside in situations requiring triage.

We present the case of an arteriovenous vascular malformation (AVM) of the right submandibular gland mimicking a Küttner's tumour on ultrasound scan in a 63-year-old woman. Examination revealed a 2 cm firm, mobile, non-pulsatile, right-sided submandibular mass with no overlying skin changes but with mild tenderness to palpation.

Domestic violence continues to be a global public health issue, and facial injuries in these cases are common with a reported incidence of up to 94%. Our aims were to identify patients with facial injuries caused by domestic violence, and to find out how confident members of the oral and maxillofacial surgical (OMFS) team were at assessing them. In this 18-month retrospective study of patients seen at King's College Hospital we identified 18 and obtained details on sex, age, nature of maxillofacial injury, mechanism of injury, time to presentation, and alleged assailant, from their electronic records.

The number of clinical trials that relate to patients with cancer of the head and neck is growing. Patient-reported outcomes, which are rarely the primary outcome, are now an important component, and in this structured review to identify and report the characteristics of the questionnaires that have been used in these trials, we summarise the findings reported. We searched several online databases using the key terms: head and neck oncology, head and neck surgery, reconstruction, clinical trials patient-reported outcomes, questionnaires, quality of life (QoL), validated instruments, and patients' satisfaction.

A fluorescence polarisation immunoassay for quantitating serum concentrations of valproic acid was developed and validated. Its low molecular weight and lack of structural features caused difficulties in producing suitable antibodies. However, success was achieved using 2-propyl-6-aminohexanoic acid to make the fluorescein-labelled drug and two immunogens, the first using glutaraldehyde to link the drug derivative to keyhole limpet haemocyanin, and the second by carbodiimide activation of cellulose hydroxyl groups and coupling them to the drug derivative and killed Mycobacteria.
