The Community Multi-Scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system was used to investigate ozone and aerosol concentrations in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) during hot summertime conditions during July 1-15, 1996. Two emission inventories (El) were developed: emissions for the first El were based upon the National Emission Trend 1996 (NET96) database and the BEIS2 biogenic emission model, and emissions for the second El were developed through a "bottom up" approach that included biogenic emissions obtained from the GLOBEIS model. The concept of intrinsic tendon healing, the idea that tendons can heal primarily without the ingrowth of fibrous adhesions from the surrounding fibrous flexor sheath, has been validated both experimentally and clinically. The goals of the surgical treatment of intrasynovial digital flexor tendon lacerations are twofold: 1) to achieve a primary tendon repair of sufficient strength so as to prevent repair site gap elongation and possible rupture, and 2) to prevent the formation of intrasynovial adhesions that cause loss of tendon excursion within the flexor tendon sheath. It is well accepted that repair site strength, both at time zero and within the first 6 postoperative weeks, is directly related to the number of core suture strands crossing the repair site.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: To evaluate objective functional and radiographic outcomes after internal fixation of acute, displaced, and unstable fractures of the distal aspect of the radius in adults by using a low-profile dorsal plating system. Our hypothesis was that the low-profile dorsal plating system would allow for a reduction of extensor tendon irritation and pain and provide stable osseous fixation.
Methods: Sixty consecutive unstable fractures in 59 patients were treated by open reduction internal fixation using a low-profile dorsal plating system.
Purpose: To report our experience using a fixed-angle volar plate in conjunction with a corrective osteotomy and cancellous bone graft for the treatment of distal radius malunions with dorsal angulation in 4 patients.
Methods: Four consecutive patients had a volarly based opening wedge osteotomy with a fixed angle volar plate and cancellous bone grafting for the treatment of a dorsally angulated distal radius malunion. Data collected retrospectively included a visual analog pain scale, grip strength, range of motion, radiographic parameters, and each patient's subjective functional outcomes as measured by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire.
Initiation of reverse transcription and nucleocapsid assembly in hepatitis B virus (HBV) depends on the specific recognition of an RNA signal (the packaging signal, epsilon) on the pregenomic RNA by the viral reverse transcriptase (RT). Using an in vitro reconstitution system whereby the cellular heat shock protein 90 chaperone system activates recombinant HBV RT for specific epsilon binding, we have defined the protein and RNA sequences required for specific HBV RT-epsilon interaction in vitro. Our results indicated that approximately 150 amino acid residues from the terminal protein domain and 230 from the RT domain were necessary and sufficient for epsilon binding.

We evaluated the use of routine histologic evaluation of excised carpal ganglions and performed a cost-benefit analysis.
Methods: A retrospective review identified 160 consecutive carpal ganglion (102 dorsal, 58 volar) excisions performed over the past 7 years by 2 surgeons.

Our recent study showed that the absence of the CDK inhibitor p18(INK4C) (p18) enhances self-renewal of normal hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) in vivo, whereas previous studies by others showed an increased incidence of leukemogenesis in older p18-null mice. Here, we have examined potential leukemogenesis during experimentally induced regeneration of HSC in the absence of p18 in order to gauge the relation between these two processes.

However no phase II trials have clearly defined the level of activity of docetaxel after mitozantrone.
Aims: We sought to define the activity and toxicity of weekly docetaxel as second line chemotherapy after mitozantrone in men with AIPC.
The mannosyltransferase mutants mnn9 and mnn10 were isolated in a genetic screen for septation defects in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Ultrastructural examination of mutant cell walls revealed markedly thin septal structures and occasional failure to construct trilaminar septa, which then led to the formation of bulky default septa at the bud neck. In the absence of a functional septation apparatus, mnn10 mutants are unable to complete cytokinesis and die as cell chains with incompletely separated cytoplasms, indicating that mannosylation defects impair the ability to form remedial septa.

Chronic ulnar-sided wrist pain may be accompanied by a history of workers' compensation claims and unrelenting and irresolvable pain, and it may occur in patients with dfficult personalities. Despite these issues, many patients with ulnar-sided wrist pain have pathologic lesions that may be amenable to surgical treatment.

The magnitude of load applied in previous studies had not been clearly controlled, and similarly, the effects of increased repair site excursion and gap formation had not been evaluated in clinically relevant models. Recent experimental in vivo data on the application of force and excursion as independent variables by the authors and other investigators have helped to clarify the respective roles of these two variables.
