The Community Multi-Scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system was used to investigate ozone and aerosol concentrations in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) during hot summertime conditions during July 1-15, 1996. Two emission inventories (El) were developed: emissions for the first El were based upon the National Emission Trend 1996 (NET96) database and the BEIS2 biogenic emission model, and emissions for the second El were developed through a "bottom up" approach that included biogenic emissions obtained from the GLOBEIS model. The two simulations showed that elevated PM2.

Simultaneous expression and maturation of the iron-sulfur protein ferredoxin in a cell-free system.

The model iron-sulfur (Fe-S) protein ferredoxin (Fd) from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 has been simultaneously produced and matured in a cell-free production system. After 6 h of incubation at 37 degrees C, Fd accumulated to >450 microg/mL.

Survivin and Granzyme B-induced apoptosis, a novel anticancer therapy.

Survivin is an antiapoptotic protein highly expressed in malignant cells that confers resistance to cytotoxic therapy. Granzyme B is a potent cytotoxic protein that is released from mammalian natural killer cells and CTLs following noxious stimuli, including foreign invaders. Here, we took advantage of the properties of these two functionally divergent molecules to create a molecular agent that specifically activates Granzyme B within tumor cells.

Eight-strand core suture technique for repair of intrasynovial flexor tendon lacerations.

The concept of intrinsic tendon healing, the idea that tendons can heal primarily without the ingrowth of fibrous adhesions from the surrounding fibrous flexor sheath, has been validated both experimentally and clinically. The goals of the surgical treatment of intrasynovial digital flexor tendon lacerations are twofold: 1) to achieve a primary tendon repair of sufficient strength so as to prevent repair site gap elongation and possible rupture, and 2) to prevent the formation of intrasynovial adhesions that cause loss of tendon excursion within the flexor tendon sheath. It is well accepted that repair site strength, both at time zero and within the first 6 postoperative weeks, is directly related to the number of core suture strands crossing the repair site.

Treatment of distal radius fractures with a low-profile dorsal plating system: an outcomes assessment.

Purpose: To evaluate objective functional and radiographic outcomes after internal fixation of acute, displaced, and unstable fractures of the distal aspect of the radius in adults by using a low-profile dorsal plating system. Our hypothesis was that the low-profile dorsal plating system would allow for a reduction of extensor tendon irritation and pain and provide stable osseous fixation.

Methods: Sixty consecutive unstable fractures in 59 patients were treated by open reduction internal fixation using a low-profile dorsal plating system.

Surgical correction of dorsally angulated distal radius malunions with fixed angle volar plating: a case series.

Purpose: To report our experience using a fixed-angle volar plate in conjunction with a corrective osteotomy and cancellous bone graft for the treatment of distal radius malunions with dorsal angulation in 4 patients.

Methods: Four consecutive patients had a volarly based opening wedge osteotomy with a fixed angle volar plate and cancellous bone grafting for the treatment of a dorsally angulated distal radius malunion. Data collected retrospectively included a visual analog pain scale, grip strength, range of motion, radiographic parameters, and each patient's subjective functional outcomes as measured by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire.

Hepatitis B virus reverse transcriptase and epsilon RNA sequences required for specific interaction in vitro.

Initiation of reverse transcription and nucleocapsid assembly in hepatitis B virus (HBV) depends on the specific recognition of an RNA signal (the packaging signal, epsilon) on the pregenomic RNA by the viral reverse transcriptase (RT). Using an in vitro reconstitution system whereby the cellular heat shock protein 90 chaperone system activates recombinant HBV RT for specific epsilon binding, we have defined the protein and RNA sequences required for specific HBV RT-epsilon interaction in vitro. Our results indicated that approximately 150 amino acid residues from the terminal protein domain and 230 from the RT domain were necessary and sufficient for epsilon binding.

Use of routine histologic evaluation of carpal ganglions.

Purpose: Although histologic evaluation is performed routinely on tissue removed during the excision of carpal ganglions, the necessity of this evaluation is uncertain. We evaluated the use of routine histologic evaluation of excised carpal ganglions and performed a cost-benefit analysis.

Methods: A retrospective review identified 160 consecutive carpal ganglion (102 dorsal, 58 volar) excisions performed over the past 7 years by 2 surgeons.

Alleviating debilitating, chronic constipation with colostomy after appendicostomy: a case study.

Severe chronic constipation is a debilitating condition. Patients not only experience infrequent bowel movements, but also are often frustrated by the sensation of incomplete evacuation; pain; straining; daily use of enemas; and continual concerns regarding diet, fluids, and medications. Diagnostic tests are performed to rule out organic causes of the condition.

Disarming the guarded prognosis: predicting survival in newly referred patients with incurable cancer.

People affected by cancer want information about their prognosis but clinicians have trouble estimating and talking about it. We sought to determine the nature and accuracy of medical oncologists' estimates of life expectancy in newly referred patients with incurable cancer. With reference to each patient, medical oncologists estimated how long they thought 90, 50, and 10% of similar patients would live.

Ant navigation: one-way routes rather than maps.

In recent years, there has been an upsurge of interest and debate about whether social insects-central-place foragers such as bees and ants-acquire and use cognitive maps, which enable the animal to steer novel courses between familiar sites . Especially in honey bees, it has been claimed that these insects indeed possess such "general landscape memories" and use them in a "map-like" way . Here, we address this question in Australian desert ants, Melophorus bagoti, which forage within cluttered environments full of nearby and more distant landmarks.

Hematopoietic stem cells are not the direct target of spontaneous leukemic transformation in p18(INK4C)-null reconstituted mice.

Cell cycle inhibitors are important regulators in normal tissue regeneration and disruption of the regulators are involved in cancer development. Our recent study showed that the absence of the CDK inhibitor p18(INK4C) (p18) enhances self-renewal of normal hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) in vivo, whereas previous studies by others showed an increased incidence of leukemogenesis in older p18-null mice. Here, we have examined potential leukemogenesis during experimentally induced regeneration of HSC in the absence of p18 in order to gauge the relation between these two processes.

Identification of unrelated cord blood units for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in children with sickle cell disease.

This study examined the theoretical availability of compatible unrelated umbilical cord blood (UCB) units for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) of children with sickle cell disease (SCD), matched for DRB1 at high resolution. UCB units registered via Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide were matched with patients who had been previously typed for possible HSCT. Suitable matching was determined after typing at antigen level at A and B loci and allele-level typing at DRB1.

[Fatal pulmonary mucormycosis in a diabetic patient].

We report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis in a 65-year-old diabetic patient. Pulmonary mucormycosis should be suspected in predisposed patients presenting a pneumonia that resists to antibiotics. The microbiologic diagnosis requires usually a biopsy using bronchoscopic or surgical procedures.

Weekly docetaxel as second line treatment after mitozantrone for androgen-independent prostate cancer.

Background: Two recent phase III trials have shown an improvement in survival with the use of docetaxel in metastatic androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC) compared to mitozantrone. However no phase II trials have clearly defined the level of activity of docetaxel after mitozantrone.

Aims: We sought to define the activity and toxicity of weekly docetaxel as second line chemotherapy after mitozantrone in men with AIPC.

Importance of cell wall mannoproteins for septum formation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The mannosyltransferase mutants mnn9 and mnn10 were isolated in a genetic screen for septation defects in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Ultrastructural examination of mutant cell walls revealed markedly thin septal structures and occasional failure to construct trilaminar septa, which then led to the formation of bulky default septa at the bud neck. In the absence of a functional septation apparatus, mnn10 mutants are unable to complete cytokinesis and die as cell chains with incompletely separated cytoplasms, indicating that mannosylation defects impair the ability to form remedial septa.

Blood vessels engineered from human cells.

Tissue engineering has made considerable progress in the past decade, but advances have stopped short of clinical application for most tissues. We postulated that an obstacle in engineering human tissues is the limited replicative capacity of adult somatic cells. To test this hypothesis, the effectiveness of telomerase expression to extend cellular lifespan was assessed in a model of human vascular tissue engineering.

Ulnar-sided wrist pain: diagnosis and treatment.

Ulnar-sided wrist pain has often been equated with low back pain because of its insidious onset, vague and chronic nature, intermittent symptoms, and frustration that it induces in patients. Chronic ulnar-sided wrist pain may be accompanied by a history of workers' compensation claims and unrelenting and irresolvable pain, and it may occur in patients with dfficult personalities. Despite these issues, many patients with ulnar-sided wrist pain have pathologic lesions that may be amenable to surgical treatment.

Processing abstract sequence structure: learning without knowing, or knowing without learning?

Constant interaction with a dynamic environment-from riding a bicycle to segmenting speech-makes sensitivity to the sequential structure of the world a fundamental dimension of information processing. Accounts of sequence learning vary widely, with some authors arguing that parsing and segmentation processes are central, and others proposing that sequence learning involves mere memorization. In this paper, we argue that sequence knowledge is essentially statistical in nature, and that sequence learning involves simple associative prediction mechanisms.

A phase I/II study of pemetrexed and vinorelbine in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Purpose: Pemetrexed and vinorelbine are active antineoplastic agents in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Phase I objectives include maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and recommended phase II dose determination, and pharmacokinetics of the pemetrexed-vinorelbine doublet in locally advanced or metastatic solid tumor patients (pts). Phase II objectives include tumor response evaluation, efficacy, and toxicity for first-line treatment of advanced NSCLC.

Recent progress in flexor tendon healing. The modulation of tendon healing with rehabilitation variables.

Until recently, attempts to optimize the postoperative regimen following intrasynovial flexor tendon repair had been essentially empirical, in that both the time and graduation of the exercise regimen have lacked clear conceptual guidelines. The magnitude of load applied in previous studies had not been clearly controlled, and similarly, the effects of increased repair site excursion and gap formation had not been evaluated in clinically relevant models. Recent experimental in vivo data on the application of force and excursion as independent variables by the authors and other investigators have helped to clarify the respective roles of these two variables.
