Introduction: In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (IHCA) after ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is a subset of IHCA with high morbidity. While information on this selected group of patients is limited, closer inspection reveals that this is a challenging patient population with certain risk factors for IHCA following treatment of STEMI.

Areas Covered: In this review article, strategies for prevention of IHCA post STEMI are reviewed, as well as best-practices for the care of STEMI patients post-IHCA.

A new ibuprofen derivative, ()-2-(4-isobutylphenyl)-N'-(4-oxopentan-2-ylidene) propane hydrazide (IA), was synthesized, along with its metal complexes with Co, Cu, Ni, Gd, and Sm, to investigate their anti-inflammatory efficacy and COX-2 inhibition potential. Comprehensive characterization, including H NMR, MS, FTIR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and DFT analysis, were employed to determine the structural configurations, revealing unique motifs for Gd/Sm (capped square antiprismatic/tricapped trigonal prismatic) and Cu/Ni/Co (octahedral) complexes. Molecular docking with the COX-2 enzyme (PDB code: 5IKT) and pharmacokinetic assessments through SwissADME indicated that these compounds have superior binding energies and pharmacokinetic profiles, including BBB permeability and gastrointestinal absorption, compared to the traditional ibuprofen standalone.

Background: Environmental health research in the US has shown that racial and ethnic minorities and members of low-socioeconomic groups, are disproportionately burdened by harmful environmental exposures, in their homes, workplace, and neighborhood environments that impact their overall health and well-being. Systemic racism is a fundamental cause of these disproportionate exposures and associated health effects. To invigorate and inform current efforts on environmental justice and to raise awareness of environmental racism, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) hosted a workshop where community leaders, academic researchers, and NIEHS staff shared perspectives and discussed ways to inform future work to address health disparities.

Barrow's goldeneyes across western North America have been shown to have a high degree of subpopulation independence using several data types. However, evidence for structured populations based on mitochondrial DNA, band recoveries, and tracking of adults is discordant with evidence from autosomal DNA. We used satellite tracking data from both juveniles and adults marked on natal and breeding grounds, respectively, in British Columbia, Canada to evaluate the hypothesis that male-biased juvenile dispersal maintains genetic panmixia of Pacific Barrow's goldeneyes otherwise structured by migratory movements and high winter and breeding site fidelity of adults.

Current myocardial infarction treatments focus on improving hemodynamics rather than addressing the problem of lost myocardium impairing left ventricular function. Epicardial infarct repair with a bioactive patch placed on the ischemic area is an emerging approach to promote endogenous myocardial repair. We report the use of a second-generation CorMatrix-extracellular matrix (ECM) patch as an adjunct to surgical revascularization in treating a young patient with diffuse, multivessel coronary artery disease unamenable to PCI and a large anterior myocardial infarction.

Older adult drinking poses a growing public health concern, especially given the ongoing aging of the United States population. As part of a larger lifespan developmental project contrasting predictors of drinking reductions across different periods of adulthood, we tested age differences in effects of health problems on drinking declines across young adulthood, midlife, and older adulthood. The potential introduction of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, into North American bat populations is of interest to wildlife managers due to recent disease-mediated declines of several species. Populations of little brown bats () have collapsed due to white-nose syndrome (WNS), a disease caused by the introduction and spread of the fungal pathogen (). Throughout much of the United States and southern Canada, large colonies of the species routinely established diurnal roosts in anthropogenic structures, thereby creating the potential for direct human contact and cross-species disease transmission.

A novel derivative of ibuprofen and salicylaldehyde N'-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-(4-isobutylphenyl) propane hydrazide (HL) was synthesized, followed by its complexation with Cu, Ni, Co, Gd, and Sm. The compounds obtained were characterized by HNMR, mass spectrometry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis (DTA and TGA), conductivity measurements, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The results indicate that the complexes formed were [Cu(L)(HO)]Cl·2HO, [Ni(L)], [Co(L)]·HO, [Gd(L)(HO)](NO)·2HO and [Sm(L)(HO)](NO)·2HO.

Background: Hydrogen sulfide (HS), a gaseous signaling molecule that impacts multiple physiological processes including aging, is produced via select mammalian enzymes and enteric sulfur-reducing bacteria. HS research is limited by the lack of an accurate internal standard-containing assay for its quantitation in biological matrices.

Methods: After synthesizing [S]HS and developing sample preparation protocols that avoid sulfide contamination with the addition of thiol-containing standards or reducing reagents, we developed a stable isotope-dilution high performance liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the simultaneous quantification of Total HS and other abundant thiols (cysteine, homocysteine, glutathione, glutamylcysteine, cysteinylglycine) in biological matrices, conducted a 20-day analytical validation/normal range study, and then both analyzed circulating Total HS and thiols in plasma from 400 subjects, and within 20 volunteers before and after antibiotic-induced suppression of gut microbiota.

Recent research has advanced two degree-of-freedom (DoF), simultaneous, independent and proportional control of hand-wrist prostheses using surface electromyogram signals from remnant muscles as the control input. We evaluated two such regression-based controllers, along with conventional, sequential two-site control with co-contraction mode switching (SeqCon), in box-block, refined-clothespin and door-knob tasks, on 10 able-bodied and 4 limb-absent subjects. Subjects operated a commercial hand and wrist using a socket bypass harness.
