Public education campaigns based on FAST (Face-Arm-Speech-Time) have improved response after major stroke, but not minor stroke and TIA. In the dynamics of atoms and molecules at metal surfaces, electron-hole pair excitations can play a crucial role. In the case of hyperthermal hydrogen atom scattering, they lead to nonadiabatic energy loss and highly inelastic scattering. Molecular dynamics with electronic friction simulation results, based on an isotropic homogeneous electron gas approximation, have previously aligned well with measured kinetic energy loss distributions, indicating that this level of theoretical description is sufficient to describe nonadiabatic effects during scattering.

The process of human embryonic mammary development gives rise to the structures in which mammary cells share a developmental lineage with skin epithelial cells such as keratinocytes. As some breast carcinomas have previously been shown to express high levels of involucrin, a marker of keratinocyte differentiation, we hypothesised that some breast tumours may de-differentiate to a keratinocyte-derived 'evolutionary history'. To confirm our hypothesis, we investigated the frequency of involucrin expression along with that of Brk, a tyrosine kinase expressed in up to 86% of breast carcinomas whose normal expression patterns are restricted to differentiating epithelial cells, most notably those in the skin (keratinocytes) and the gastrointestinal tract.

Molecular energy transfer and reactions at solid surfaces depend on the molecular orientation relative to the surface. While such steric effects have been largely understood in electronically adiabatic processes, the orientation-dependent energy transfer in NO scattering from Au(111) was complicated by electron-mediated nonadiabatic effects, thus lacking a clear interpretation and posing a great challenge for theories. Reactions involving adsorbates on metallic surfaces and impurities in bulk metals are ubiquitous in a wide range of technological applications. The theoretical modeling of such reactions presents a formidable challenge for theory because nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) can play a prominent role and the coupling of the atomic motion with the electrons in the metal gives rise to important non-adiabatic effects (NAEs) that alter atomic dynamics. In this work, we derive a theoretical framework that captures both NQEs and NAEs and, due to its high efficiency, can be applied to first-principles calculations of reaction rates in high-dimensional realistic systems.

Polymorphisms in the region of the calmodulin-dependent kinase isoform D (CaMK1D) gene are associated with increased incidence of diabetes, with the most common polymorphism resulting in increased recognition by transcription factors and increased protein expression. While reducing CaMK1D expression has a potentially beneficial effect on glucose processing in human hepatocytes, there are no known selective inhibitors of CaMK1 kinases that can be used to validate or translate these findings. Here we describe the development of a series of potent, selective, and drug-like CaMK1 inhibitors that are able to provide significant free target cover in mouse models and are therefore useful as tool compounds.

Plastic marine pollution in the Arctic today illustrates the global distribution of plastic waste of all sizes traveling by wind and waves, entering food chains, and presenting challenges to management and mitigation. While currents move plastics from lower latitudes into the Arctic, significant waste is also generated by remote communities, as well as maritime activities, such as shipping, fishing and tourism, which are increasing their activities as seasonal sea ice diminishes. Mitigation strategies may include monitoring programs of plastic waste abundance and distribution, improved waste management in Arctic communities, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to reverse the transport of waste plastics and packaging from remote communities, incentivized gear recovery of abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), gear tagging and tracking, and restricting tourism and employing "leave no trace" policies.

Interactions between platelets, leukocytes and the vessel wall provide alternative pathological routes of thrombo-inflammatory leukocyte recruitment. We found that when platelets were activated by a range of agonists in whole blood, they shed platelet-derived extracellular vesicles which rapidly and preferentially bound to blood monocytes compared to other leukocytes. Platelet-derived extracellular vesicle binding to monocytes was initiated by P-selectin-dependent adhesion and was stabilised by binding of phosphatidylserine.

Overexpression of EGFR is a negative prognostic factor in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
