Academic mothers, professional identity and COVID-19: Feminist reflections on career cycles, progression and practice.

Based on a collection of auto-ethnographic narratives that reflect our experiences as academic mothers at an Australian university, this paper seeks to illustrate the impact of COVID-19 on our career cycles in order to explore alternative feminist models of progression and practice in Higher Education. Collectively, we span multiple disciplines, parenting profiles, and racial/ethnic backgrounds. Our narratives (initiated in 2019) explicate four focal points in our careers as a foundation for analyzing self-definitions of professional identity: pre- and post-maternity career break; and pre- and post-COVID-19 career.

Intra-operative use of biological products-Are we aware of their derivatives?

Introduction: Global medical advances within healthcare have subsequently led to the widespread introduction of biological products such as grafts, haemostats, and sealants. Although these products have been used for many decades, this subject is frequently not discussed during the consent process and remains an area of contention.

Methods: A nationwide confidential online survey was distributed to UK-based junior registrars (ST3-5), senior registrars (ST6-8), post-CCT fellows, specialist associates/staff grade doctors and consultants working in general/vascular surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery and plastic surgery.

Effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy for community living depressed women involved with the justice system.

Background: Despite the prevalence of depression among women in the justice system, and its potentially significant consequences, there is a dearth of studies investigating psychological treatments for depression in this context, especially outside prison.

Aims: Our aim was to gather preliminary data on whether individual interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is an acceptable and effective treatment for depression in women at an early stage in the justice system.

Method: In this pilot study, IPT was offered to 24 depressed women following their first or second contact with the justice system.

A rare case of unilateral hemifacial spasm and facial palsy associated with an abnormal anatomical variant of the posterior basilar circulation.

Tortuous vertebral arteries are a rare anatomical variant. Mild tortuosity is usually asymptomatic whereas severe tortuosity may present with ischaemic symptoms or compressive symptoms (focal neurological deficit). While a resulting hemifacial spasm has been previously described, sparse literature exists for its association with facial palsy.

Head and Neck Anatomy: Effect of Focussed Near-Peer Teaching on Anatomical Confidence in Undergraduate Medical Students.

Objectives: To assess the effect of near-peer head and neck anatomy teaching on undergraduates and to quantify the benefit from a focussed teaching course. Near-peer teaching involves colleagues within close seniority and age proximity teaching one another on a specified topic.

Design: Small group teaching sessions were delivered to medical students on 3 key areas of ENT anatomy.

Diagnostic utility of freehand core-needle biopsy in head and neck masses.

Objective: To review our experience with freehand core-needle biopsy in the assessment of unexplained head and neck masses.

Methods: A total of 770 patients with head and neck masses (referred over a 22-month period) were evaluated. A retrospective chart review was performed on 53 of those patients who underwent core-needle biopsy for an unexplained mass.

Patient self-assessment of nasal fractures and self-referral to an ear, nose, and throat department: a prospective study.

Objective: To assess if patients can safely self-assess their need for ear, nose, and throat (ENT) review following initial emergency department attendance for nasal trauma.

Study Design: This prospective study was divided into 2 parts. The initial part evaluated an information sheet for patients to lead them through a self-assessment to establish if they require ENT review following nasal injury.

Upper limb dysfunction following selective neck dissection: a retrospective questionnaire study.

Background: To determine total upper limb function following selective neck dissection over a mean follow-up of 1.6 years.

Methods: A retrospective questionnaire study in a tertiary head and neck surgical unit.

Can vastus medialis oblique be preferentially activated? A systematic review of electromyographic studies.

Debate exists as to whether the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) can be activated to a greater degree than the vastus lateralis to produce preferential strengthening. This systematic review aims to determine whether preferential activation of VMO can be achieved by altering lower limb joint orientation or muscular co-contraction. A search of pertinent specialist journals and of the electronic databases AMED, CINAHL, the Cochrane database, EMBASE, ovid Medline, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), PubMed, and Zetoc from their inception to February 2008 was undertaken.

Assessment of pharmacy manpower and services in West Virginia.

Background: The shortage of pharmacists across the nation has been much publicized and has been identified as one of the reasons for new schools of pharmacy to open or for existing colleges and schools of pharmacy to increase their class sizes. This article represents the assessment of a new school of pharmacy's evaluation of staffing and practice in its geographic area.

Objective: This survey represents the first data point within the School of Pharmacy assessment plan and will be repeated at several intervals after the program opens to longitudinally evaluate its impact on pharmacy staffing and services within West Virginia.

Magnetism in nickel and synchrotron beam polarization studied by X-ray diffraction.

The ratio of the magnetic to the charge form factors of nickel has been determined by white-beam X-ray diffraction. The measurements were made on the new UK magnetic scattering beamline (XMaS) on a dipole source at the ESRF. The data comprise the three (h,h,0) reflections (4,4,0), (6,6,0) and (8,8,0) and the seven high-order (h,0,0) reflections (6,0,0) to (18,0,0), which doubles the range of wavevectors compared to previous studies.

Hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor and MET are involved in arterial repair and atherogenesis.

Several studies have shown that in the arterial wall hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF) is expressed by smooth muscle cells (SMCs) but acts on endothelial cells, not SMCs. Other studies, however, have indicated that SMCs can respond to HGF/SF. We have reinvestigated expression and activity of HGF/SF and its receptor MET in arterial SMC and endothelial cell cultures and in whole arteries after superficial or deep injury or atherogenesis.

Evaluation of Internet use by paediatric orthopaedic outpatients and the quality of information available.

Parents use the Internet increasingly for information about their children's medical problems. There is no quality control for medical information content. The goals of our study were to assess Internet awareness by families seen in paediatric orthopaedic outpatients departments and the type, quality and reliability of information available, using clubfoot as an example.

Long-term low-dose treatment with reserpine of cholesterol-fed rabbits reduces cholesterol in plasma, non-high density lipoproteins and arterial walls.

The effects of long-term low-dose treatment with reserpine on plasma lipoproteins and arterial cholesterol were determined in cholesterol-fed rabbits. Hepatic low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors; uptake of LDL by liver, heart, and kidneys; plasma fibrinogen; blood pressure; and heart rate were also determined. Reserpine at 43 microg/kg.

The XMaS beamline at ESRF: instrumental developments and high-resolution diffraction studies.

The beamline, which is situated on a bending magnet at ESRF, comprises a unique combination of instrumentation for high-resolution and magnetic single-crystal diffraction. White-beam operation is possible, as well as focused and unfocused monochromatic modes. In addition to an eleven-axis Huber diffractometer, which facilitates simple operation in both vertical and horizontal scattering geometries, there is an in-vacuum polarization analyser and slit system, mirrors for harmonic rejection, sub 4.

Human blood-derived macrophages induce apoptosis in human plaque-derived vascular smooth muscle cells by Fas-ligand/Fas interactions.

Human atherosclerotic plaques that rupture are characterized by relatively low vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) and high inflammatory cell contents. Ruptured plaques also contain higher numbers of apoptotic VSMCs than do stable lesions, suggesting that VSMC apoptosis may promote plaque rupture. We examined the ability of human monocytes/macrophages to induce apoptosis of VSMCs derived from human carotid plaque, aortic media, and coronary media.
